Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori lectured in Italian during the first International Montessori Course in 1939 at Madras, India. These 75 lectures were translated into English by her son Mario, as she spoke. And were taken down near verbatim in short hand, transcribed and set into galleys overnight. One such set of proofs forms the original manuscript for this book. For the most part, each chapter in this book encompasses a single lecture. The lectures are left in the same order as they were given, swinging between psychology and the use of the materials. India’s diversity of language, social custom and religious practice enriched her research. During this time, Dr. Montessori worked with children in Madras and put into practice her theories of adapting the environment, furniture and the Practical Life materials to local conditions. In these lectures, Maria Montessori speaks with the mature wisdom of a lifetime spent studying, not just early childhood, but human development as a whole and gives a complete, wonderful and colorful overview of her pedagogy and philosophy.

Abstract/Notes: This research investigates the learning impact of Montessori prekindergarten training as compared to traditional approaches with economically deprived Puerto Rican and Negro children. The three-part, 156-page monograph includes a 22-page introduction to Parts I and II, and a 37-page appendix to Part I. Parts I and II assess training effects of the first year of schooling, focusing on children beginning prekindergarten at approximately 4 to 4 1/2 years of age. The basic research design also includes an evaluation of training for children beginning school at 3 to 3 1/2 years. Part I contains an evaluation of perceptual and cognitive abilities. Part II investigates pupil preference for cognitive styles typifying ego strength in the young child and relevant for autonomous problem-solving strategies. Part III includes a follow-up assessment conducted at the end of kindergarten in order to investigate the cumulative effects of training over a longer period of schooling. The appendix to Part I contains age, sex, and ethnicity trends for the population investigated, a 25-page description of the test battery, a sample teaching log monthly checklist, and a list of sample questions for teacher interviews. The monograph also includes a list of 54 references used for Parts I, II, and III.

Master's Thesis

Where does it all begin? An examination of three alternative prekindergarten educational experiences

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: This thesis investigates historical backgrounds, philosophies, and practices of three well-established prekindergarten/early childhood programs--Montessori, Waldorf, and Head Start. Investigative methods included library and internet research, classroom observations, and interviews with program administrators, teachers, and parents. Findings showed good consistency between philosophies and practices, notable differences among programs, and certain pedagogical and theoretical issues unique to each. Data indicated that Montessori promotes children's natural development and self-teaching through sequential didactic materials presented in a prepared environment with a focus on sensory, motor, and intellectual experiences; Waldorf fosters children's creativity, imaginative play, and sensitivity to nature through songs, poems, verbally-told stories, and eurythmy (a dance-like art form); and Head Start provides comprehensive services to disadvantaged children and their families through planned educational experiences, health and nutrition services, family and community program involvement. Research was not directed toward establishing program effectiveness or determining which program demonstrated the best early childhood practices.
