Abstract/Notes: Today, on almost every continent, there are schools adopting in spirit and practice the ideas of Maria Montessori who ranks with Pestalozzi, Froebel, and Dewey in the field of education. Her approach to early childhood education can be linked to the Thomistic dictum that there is nothing in the intellect which is not first in the senses. In this article, the author discusses the important elements present in the Montessori method, as well as Dr. Montessori's educational aims. An environment with "built in" discipline teaches the small child a great deal about physical self-mastery. It is not the verbal emphasis that abounds in the Montessori method, but the sensory. Dr. Montessori's educational aims were twofold: to help children develop and to help them adapt themselves to the physical conditions of their environment and to the social requirements dictated by the customs of the group in which they live. As the Montessori approach has been modified in every culture in which it is found, some modifications would be necessary in the U.S., but the possibility for the success of such an approach seems unquestionable. Like children everywhere, American children can benefit from what Maria Montessori has offered in the rest of the world.

Abstract/Notes: Formerly entitled The Montessori Method: Scientific Pedagogy as Applied to Child Education in the Children's Houses. This book was first published in 1909 under the title 'Il Metodo della Pedagogia Scientifica Applicato all'Educazione Infantile nelle Case dei Bambini' ('The Montessori Method: Scientific Pedagogy as Applied to Child Education in the Children's Houses) and was revised in 1913, 1926, and 1935. Maria Montessori revised and reissued this book in 1948 and renamed it 'La Scoperta del Bambino'. This edition is based on the 6th Italian edition of 'La Scoperta del Bambino' published by the Italian publisher Garzanti, Milan, Italy in 1962. M. J. Costelloe, S. J. translated this Italian version into the English language in 1967 for Fides Publishers, Inc. In 2016 Fred Kelpin edited this version and added many footnotes. He incorporated new illustrations based on AMI-blueprints of the materials currently in use.

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori was an Italian psychiatrist who dedicated her life to education, firstly educating children who had psychological difficulties and then working at Casa dei Bambini with children aged 3 to 6 years. In this context, she developed the method of Scientific Pedagogy, which became known worldwide as Montessori Method. Currently, her method covers the education of babies up to college students. Although her ideas have reached the most diverse age groups, several countries and even non-education areas, such as nursing homes and hospitals; Montessori, even today, is little known. This study aims at revisiting the works of Maria Montessori and her collaborators to understand their contributions to early childhood education. To achieve this objective, a qualitative approach research was used, with bibliographic research as procedure. This work was divided into three sections. The first section presents the life of Maria Montessori and the development of her method, the production of her works; it also contextualizes Montessori in the educational context of that time: showing its non-connection with the New Education that was developed in the same period; in addition, it presents some of its main collaborators, such as: Mario Montessori, Gianna Gobbi, Adele Gnocchi, Silvana Montanaro, Camilo Grazzini, Helena Lubienska de Lenval, Paula and Angeline Lillard, Catherine L’Ecuyer, Talita Almeida; ending the chapter with the arrival of the System in Brazil. In the second section, there is the Montessori vision of human development, demonstrating The Four Plans of Human Development with the geometric and organic figures (Bulb) elaborated by the author. The third section presents the contributions of Maria Montessori to the education of strong, happy and integral children, presenting three important elements that are related in the education process: the environment, the teacher and the child; thus it presents what is needed from each of these to achieve the objective of forming strong, happy and integral children. This work concluded that the Montessori System has a lot to contribute to education, especially for early childhood education.
