Abstract/Notes: This study investigates the efficacy of Conscious Discipline’s teaching strategies to enrich social-emotional learning and establish a positive classroom climate in an early childhood Montessori classroom. Conscious Discipline is a written program, of instructional and behavioral strategies created by Dr. Becky Bailey (2011). The question throughout this research project was “Does teaching Conscious Discipline strategies enhance social-emotional learning in preschool aged children?” The study was conducted in a Montessori classroom, the participants being both boys and girls ranging in age from 3 to 4 years. For six weeks, Conscious Discipline strategies were being implemented on a day-to-day basis, when dealing with real-life incidents in the classroom, reading books purchased through Conscious Discipline and establishing a Safe Place. During this sixweek study data was gathered through observations, a pre-survey, and a standardized assessment, and analyzed to document the effects of Conscious Discipline. The data collected demonstrated an increase in social-emotional learning, an increase in the joy in teaching, a positive classroom climate, a decrease in aggressive acts, and an increase in student respect and responsibility in a social community.

Abstract/Notes: This study investigated the effect of using activities based on the Montessori approach in science academic achievement of the fourth grade students. A quasiexperimental design was used wherein the students were equally divided into two groups: the experimental and the control group. Both groups consisted of 31 students. To achieve the aim of the study, Montessori Hall has been set up with six dimensions, and each corner has several shelves comprised different materials used for conducting the science activities. In addition, a teacher guide was prepared to be used by the teacher to implement the Montessori approach for the experimental group. Finally, an achievement test that consisted of seven multiple choice questions (MCQs) and five short answer questions was constructed and administered to both study groups. The results of the study indicated that there were statistically significant differences at the level of significance (P ≤ 0.05) between the mean values of the experimental and the control groups in the academic achievement in favor of the experimental group. In light of the study results, the study recommends holding training workshops for teachers on how to use the Montessori approach in teaching science classes.

Abstract/Notes: This paper considers the phenomenon of age-grouping in English Schools from the standpoint of the possible disadvantage experienced by younger children in a cohort. It is argued that conventional age-grouping is the combined result of an accident of history, political ideology and professional inertia, and that no formal policy exists in England which serves to prescribe how schools should be organised. Instead, the effects of other policies and legislation, influencing, for example, the curriculum and assessment, combine to make alternative forms of organisation difficult, if not impossible, giving rise to, what I have called, an ‘implicit policy’. Implicit policies, I argue, can be as influential and constraining as explicit ones, and can sway professional attitudes and behaviour in subtle ways. In the case of the implicit policy on age grouping – what I have termed the age-group paradigm – my research has shown that teachers can be led through a form of professional misrecognition to misconstrue existing arrangements as arising from professional judgments rather than from political, social or economic pressures. Unquestioning acceptance of the paradigm can lead to potentially harmful labelling of children and the formation of assumptions about the abilities of younger pupils in a year group which may prevent their true potential being recognised.
