Abstract/Notes: The use of the hand is a physiological sequence. The prehensile nature of the human hand is an evolutionary feature as is the freeing of the hands due to bipedalism. Kay Baker outlines of the human hand's significance to the mind as found in chapter 14 of the "Absorbent Mind." In this article, she has created lists that break down the implication of the hand as an expression of the mind, the hand as a companion to the mind, the hand that creates the handiwork of civilization, the hand as a way to social life through manual division of labor. The article also discusses how Montessori pedagogy utilizes the hand and its related capacities to allow the student to understand the nature of human work through the ages, and to see how the hand is the basis of Cosmic Education.

Abstract/Notes: Purpose: This article investigates the role of private supplementary tutoring in Denmark in light of the country's pedagogical traditions in schools and leisure spheres. Design/Approach/Methods: Although tutoring activities are increasing, the phenomenon is not as prevalent in Denmark as in many other countries. In this article, we look in to the history of Danish pedagogy for answers as to why this is the case. In the analytical sections of the article, we include research on parental values of child-rearing, as well as findings from a pilot study on Danish families purchasing private supplementary tutoring, the public debate about private tutoring, and contemporary youth research. Findings: With a solid emphasis on democracy and equality in Danish pedagogy, the conditions for increasing private supplementary tutoring in Denmark have been challenged. However, a current focus on global competition, formal competencies, and higher academic performance among children and young people suggests that providers of private tutoring perhaps face a brighter future also in Denmark. Originality/Value: This article addresses a new field of qualitative research on private supplementary tutoring in Denmark and may be a platform for further reflection and empirical research.

The Meaning of Freedom in the Education of the Child: Maria Montessori

Abstract/Notes: In this work an attempt has been made to study Montessori's life and educational activities. Her early educational environment and its effects are analysed and an attempt made to show how these influences produced in Montessori the germs of her educational theory regarding the freedom of the child. An attempt is made to show how the theory of the freedom of the child is congruent with the psychological theories which were popular at that time. The theoretical and practical application of the freedom of the child in its education is analysed in relation to the adult environment, the family and the school. An attempt is made to show how the Montessori material can lead the child to freedom and self discipline. It is shown that early child training in movement, which she entitled 'work', is a constant in her system. Montessori's theory that the child's intellect can be enhanced by providing educational materials which can lead to the child's ordering his mind at an early age has relevance to our age and the significance for contemporary practice in schooling is noted
