Practical Partnership: An Interactive Montessori Elementary Handbook for Teachers and Parents

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: Parent-teacher partnership could dramatically improve educational outcomes for students (Bikmaz & Guler, 2003; Epstein, 2001). However, most teachers and parents lack knowledge and resources for creating this relationship (Christenson, 2004; Epstein, 2001; Henderson & Mapp, 2002). The interactive handbook is a tool for Montessori elementary educators and parents that addresses the common barriers to connection and develops a partnership to provide a continuation of lessons and values from the classroom to the home. The implementation is focused on the Montessori elementary context as it correlates to the "cosmic education" philosophy. Current parents and teachers in the public and private sector of Montessori elementary education evaluated the handbook, and their feedback was incorporated to be the most relevant and effective tool possible.

Abstract/Notes: Dr. Maria Montessori and her attractive interpreter, Miss Adelia Pyle, will return from Los Angeles, where they went a few days ago, to spend Christmas at Boyland. After serving for four years as visualized senses of speech and hearing for the famous physician and educator, Miss Pyle seems almost Dr. Montessori's second self. Seated between the doctor and a visitor, she is intensely sympathetic and quick to catch every shade of meaning in what is said. With a quick cleverness born of association, she seems to anticipate what many of the doctor's answers will be, and her interpretation is usually preceded with "She feels that" such and such is the case. The famous originator of the Montessori system is much younger in appearance than one anticipates. She is rather tall and has the attractive brown eyes and hair characteristic of many of her countrymen. Miss Pyle is petite and blonde, with most attractive eyes, and a soft, pleasant voice. She is an American girl, a daughter of the man who originated and manufactured pearline. While visiting in Rome, Miss Pyle was introduced to Dr. Montessori, who admired her, and after quickly mastering Italian she became interpreter to Dr. Montessori. The first lecture she interpreted for the doctor was given in Holland and translated into French.

Abstract/Notes: Developing new units allows us to revisit the basics: conducting research to ensure information is accurate, writing lesson plans, creating materials, and evaluating the unit when presenting the concept to the children. ♦ Present workshops at local or national conferences, whether Montessori or non-Montessori. Share information about a project effectively implemented in your school or a community service project completed by your class. ♦ Work with teacher education programs. Supporting adult learners as a field consultant; working as a support staff person, where you assist in reviewing assignments; and potentially working as a course instructor are all ways to connect with teacher education programs.
