The Effects of Daily Read Alouds on Comprehension Acquisition in a Montessori Setting
Available from: St. Catherine University

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this research study was to examine the effects of chapter book read alouds on young children’s comprehension in a Montessori setting. Children participated in discussion and a retell activity while I read a chapter book aloud during the lunch period over of three weeks. This helped me gather data on the effects of the children’s comprehension and understanding of the story over a period of time. Seven children between the ages of five and six years participated in this study. All of these children attend a private Montessori school in a midwestern metropolitan area and attend the school Monday through Friday until at least 3pm each day. Data showed that the discussion and activity implemented in the study assisted children in their understanding of the chapter book over a period of time, even though there were some inconsistencies in the data gathered. The action plan includes changes in times of day read alouds are implemented, changes in number of days read alouds are implemented, and emphasis on story sequencing when retelling a story.

Abstract/Notes: Occasionally, a true emergency occurs, requiring the implementation and coordination of an appropriate response, be it administering an emergency inhaler to an asthmatic student or providing an epinephrine injection to a food-allergic child showing signs of anaphylaxis- and, in either case, calling 911. To ensure that my nursing skills are up to date, I attend conferences and earned both a national certification for school nurses and a master's degree in nursing. (Did I mention hand washing?) We hold CPR and first aid trainings onsite periodically throughout the year, and every member of our staff (from teachers to maintenance staff to the business manager) maintains current certification. WMS currently has about 200 students, ranging in age from 12 months to 12 years, during the regular school day, plus a before- and aftercare program for our own students as well as students from the local public schools, and an active summer camp.

Abstract/Notes: Background People with dementia in institutional settings lack engagement in meaningful occupations, which may cause decreased quality of life. Although many researchers and professionals have proposed approaches to engage people with dementia in these occupations, an overview seems to be missing. Aim This scoping review provides an overview by categorizing and describing the characteristics of the approaches. Material and method A thorough literature search in nine databases identified the studies on approaches. We included 54 studies, and extracted bibliometric data. A content analysis revealed the characteristics of the approaches. Results Four categories of approaches were uncovered. First, the literature defined the concept of meaningful occupation in various ways. Second, a category of approaches provided theoretical knowledge of meaningful occupations. The third category focussed on specific themes, such as certain methods. The final described comprehensive multilevel approaches. Conclusion This review contributes to knowledge of the diversity of approaches to engage people with dementia in meaningful occupation within institutional settings. Significance We suggest that occupational therapy researchers and practitioners consider how the concept of meaningful occupation is embedded in the theoretical landscape. Furthermore, activity programming requires reflexive decision-making at the policy and practice level, as engagement in meaningful occupations is complex.

Community-Building in a Diverse Setting

Abstract/Notes: Research demonstrates that community-building in schools is an integral aspect of student success. Based on a foundation of research findings related to the importance of implementing community-building into all aspects of a school, community-building activities, including five specific classroom strategies (parent visits class to tell about child, weekly newsletter with interactive activities, bi-monthly open-house hour where children explain school work to parents, Valentine letters filled with true compliments, and a cultural celebration unit focused on Africa), were implemented in an urban magnet school. This school was moving toward racial integration as well as implementation of a Montessori education program. As predicted from research information, incorporating community-building strategies geared at creating a welcoming climate, at improving faculty interaction, at fostering collaborative classrooms, and towards on-going and open teacher/parent communication and collaboration resulted in positive outcomes in what could have otherwise been a difficult, negative or unproductive situation.
