Reasons for Documentation in Early Childhood Education Centres
Available from: Springer Link
Book Title: Pedagogical Documentation in Early Childhood Education: Process-Oriented Procedures for Documenting Education and Development
Pages: 5-29
See More
Abstract/Notes: The documentation of educational processes and the development of children is today seen as a sign of high quality in ECE centres and as a central task of pedagogues. This general and widely undisputed setting is fed by both (elementary) pedagogical theories and programs as well as by political requirements. First, four significant educational approaches (Montessori and Waldorf education as well as the Situation approach and the Reggio approach) will be examined to see what importance they attribute to documentation. Subsequently, the today in theory and practice of elementary education dominant social constructivist educational understanding will be illuminated in more detail with regard to documentation; this is followed by an analysis of the curricula of the German federal states as relevant political framework for the work in ECE centres. Finally, these theoretical and political foundations will be brought together by working out the diversity of objectives associated with documentation as well as the different addressees of documentation.

Abstract/Notes: One of the major components of Dr. Montessori's plan for peace education is a curriculum that de-emphasizes nationalism. The "big picture" of the cultural curriculum encourages the perspective that people are citizens of Earth first, and only secondarily American, Japanese, Polish, or other nationalities. Through the fundamental needs material, children learn that all people on all continents throughout history had and have the same basic needs. In preindustrial times, geographic context, together with local natural resources, determined how different groups of people met their needs. And because this is still true, the Montessori geography curriculum is not limited to land and water forms and political borders, but necessarily extends to the people who inhabit other places. It teaches that other people are much like everyone else in terms of basic needs, but that they may meet those needs in very different ways; and children learn to respect those differences. Such a perspective is developed in Montessori settings even where little ethnic, religious, or social diversity exists, as long as a quality program is in place. Additionally, planetwide problems that Montessori may not have specifically anticipated, such as global warming, necessitate new attitudes and curricula that form and emphasize an "ecopsychological" awareness. This article examines the relevance of Montessori education to international schools: When properly integrated, Montessori complements and enhances many aspects of an international school, but when misapplied or partially applied, the obstacles that result can be quite difficult to overcome.

Whole Systems Thinking: Education for Sustainability at a Montessori School
Available from: InformIT
Publication: Eingana, vol. 30, no. 1
Date: Jun 2007
Pages: 9-11

Abstract/Notes: Whole systems thinking is a framework for seeing the whole picture, for establishing interrelationships and understanding phenomena as an integrated whole. Systems thinking may be contrasted with fragmentary thinking, which is viewing phenomena in their separate parts and focusing only on narrow specialisations. In an education for sustainability (EfS) context this means emphasising relationships: relationships between all the systems on planet Earth, and at different systems levels, as they relate to the environment, economics, government, health, and so on. Values and goals are also important aspects of these relationships. Sterling argues that: 'We are educated by and large to compete and consume rather than to care and conserve'. Furthermore, the same author maintains that because of the imposition of managerial and economic values on education we have lost touch with the social values and real-life contexts of authentic education. With these ideas in mind, this paper briefly examines the application of whole systems thinking on an EfS program at a small Montessori primary school in the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia.
