Abstract/Notes: Peace education is arguably one of the underappreciated areas of study within the social sciences. Many lifelong, dedicated peace education professionals often feel undervalued by the military-industrial complex apparatus. Influential individuals and corporations that thrive in chaotic and conflicting environments every so often underestimate the relevance of peace educators. Educators find among academic and professional students an intensified urgency to learn the skills necessary to address real-world conflict; however, these courageous individuals are seemingly battling powerful forces with wealth and power. Although such happenings can be demoralizing, it is slowly galvanizing dedicated peace educators to evolve by altering their skill sets, remaining resilient, and growing from the ongoing challenges. In this dissertation, I sought to investigate the lived experiences of peace educators and explore, through their voices, the challenges they face as global conflicts spiral out of control. This study aims to share the peace educators’ voices first-hand. From the findings, the study unveils some of the invisible structural and systemic issues that often undermine peace educators’ efforts. Participants’ storylines showed that the job is interdisciplinary, transformative, and holistic. Bringing forth the narratives and interpreting their stories were pivotal in unearthing peace educators’ involvement in designing programs, developing conflict management strategies, and deepening their understanding of educational policies.

Abstract/Notes: This study investigated the use of directives by three bilingual Korean American children and their families in central New Jersey in the contexts of home and school. Directives are a crucial part of language socialization in the home (Bhimji, 2002; Blum-Kulka, 1997; Kent, 2012) and they are a critical part of the teacher’s repertoire in the classroom since directives aid teachers in the daily task of instructing the learning processes of students (Waring & Hruska, 2012). While directives play an important role in the language socialization practices of children in the home and school, there is little research on how directives are used by bilingual children in both settings of home and school. The study addressed this gap in research by examining the directive repertoires of three bilingual Korean American children and their families in their homes and by analyzing how the children’s directive repertoires intersected with the use of directives in their preschool classroom. The study consisted of an eight-month ethnography of three Korean American children and their families. The participants included three Korean American children, their parents, siblings, and teachers in their preschool class. The children were recruited from a preschool class in which the researcher had previously volunteered. The data was collected through field observations in the three homes and preschool class, interviews of children, parents, and teachers, and a collection of material artifacts in order to capture the use of directives of participants. All observations were audio-and video-recorded. The study contributed to an increased understanding of the bilingualism and biculturalism of Korean American children with a focus on their use of directives. It also shed light on the educational experiences and challenges of bilingual Korean American children in a monolingual preschool class. The study has implications for families and teachers of young bilingual children and learners of English in preschool.

Abstract/Notes: Today, with the implementation of quality education, humanistic culture is integrated into preschool education. Under different backgrounds, the integration of humanistic thought in preschool education can help children grow up and receive a better education. Montessori's teaching thought has exerted a vital influence on the early childhood education system in China and is highly praised by many early childhood educators, which is of great practical significance to the development of children. Based on this, this article takes Montessori's education idea as the main starting point, carries on the elaboration from the thought outline and the core goal two aspects, analyzes the current country's preschool education situation, and inquires into its existence the question. Finally, from esteem heredity, enviromnent education, and sense organ education, this paper carries on a brief discussion of the practice of Montessori education through countermeasures, to further enrich the theoretical system of preschool education in China and make important contributions to the practical exploration of preschool education.

Abstract/Notes: According to the World Health Organization, there are currently more than 55 million people living with dementia worldwide, and this figure is expected to triple by 2050. Recent studies suggest that there may be a link between childhood trauma (which refers to exposure to overwhelmingly stressful experiences before the age of 18 years) and the onset of dementia in later life. Therefore, in communities caring for persons living with dementia, some residents may have been exposed to trauma in childhood. Currently, there is an increasing awareness of the negative impact of childhood trauma on later adult health and well-being, and a corresponding recognition of the need for services, including for dementia care, to be trauma-informed. In the last decade, the Montessori Method has become established as a legitimate approach to elder/dementia care. However, it has not yet been examined as a trauma-informed approach. The aim of this paper is to address that gap by (a) highlighting how Maria Montessori took steps to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge of trauma into her Method when she began to understand the potential of childhood trauma to adversely impact adult health and well-being, and (b) outlining how the Montessori Method, when applied to dementia care, incorporates many of the core principles of trauma-informed practice. This paper concludes that the Montessori Method for dementia care has the built-in capacity to be trauma-sensitive and trauma-responsive, but that its ongoing rollout should follow Montessori’s lead by specifically integrating knowledge about the neurobiology of trauma into its training programs.

Autonomous workshops and individual Montessori type activities: An analysis of their effects on learning and inequalities

Available from: OAPEN

Book Title: The Fabrication of the Autonomous Learner: Ethnographies of Educational Practices in Switzerland, France and Germany

Pages: 25-40

Abstract/Notes: As analysed by Bernard Lahire, the ideal-typical figure of the autonomous pupil in school is that of “an active pupil, in search of meaning, a pupil reflecting, discovering for himself, organizing himself, making choices, self-evaluating and sometimes self-correcting, a pupil who has contributed to making common rules and who, as a result, respects them” (2005, p. 158, our translation). This conception of what a pupil is leads to pedagogical arrangements in the classroom which reflect these expectations of autonomy and the intellectual, instrumental, moral, and expressive forms of engagement that underpin them (Durler, 2014). This autonomy is generally considered as being “already there” and its historical, social, or educational conditions are neither explicitly acknowledged nor questioned. It thus contributes to the development of educational inequalities among pupils who are more or less familiar with the attitudes required in these forms of organization (Périer, 2014). This vision of an autonomous pupil can be found in the first years of schooling in many countries. In the case of France, Christophe Joigneaux (2014) has highlighted how, in the ministerial texts dedicated to the école maternelle, autonomy constitutes a “pedagogical ideal” whose clout has been growing since the 1970s.

Upotreba faktorske analize u ispitivanju poželjnosti alternativnih odgojnih koncepata [The use of factor analysis in examining the desirability of alternative educational concepts]

TRADICIONALNI ODGOJ i 3.

Equity Examined: Awareness and Analysis for Liberatory Education

Available from: ProQuest

Publication: Montessori Life, vol. 35, no. 3

Abstract/Notes: Equity Examined is both a series of essays and an assessment tool designed to help schools and teacher education programs measure and understand the current state of DEI [diversity, equity, and inclusion] within their organizations. Before it was Amazon's #1 New Release in the Education Assessment category, before it had international distribution, it began as a lofty idea in the minds and hearts of a small group of Montessorians trying to wrap their minds around a huge task: supporting anti-bias, antiracist practices in AMS schools and teacher education programs, and meeting the needs of our diverse community. According to Love, four elements enable humans to live outside the behaviors and thoughts we've been socialized into that allow us to perpetuate inequities: awareness, analysis, acting, and accountability/allyship.

The Genesis and Disappearance of Homer Lane’s Little Commonwealth: A Weberian Analysis

Available from: Springer Link

Book Title: Persistenz und Verschwinden. Persistence and Disappearance: Pädagogische Organisationen im historischen Kontext. Educational Organizations in their historical Contexts

Pages: 237-253

Abstract/Notes: The case considered in this chapter is that of the Little Commonwealth, an innovative institution for delinquent and troubled youth that was established in Dorset in England in 1913. It was characterised by a form of self-government in which the inmates, or “citizens”, as they were referred to, enacted their own laws, executed them and punished offenders. It was also characterised by a commitment to the redeeming power of labour and by its adaptation of an approach developed in the United States, which drew upon elements of practice that first emerged in Europe. A brief account of the organization’s genesis is provided together with the career of its superintendent, Homer Lane. The social organization of the Little Commonwealth is then outlined along with a narrative account of its demise. Trying to capture the organizational culture of the Little Commonwealth is difficult, as the sources concentrate only on Lane and one of his colleagues. Given the commitment to self-government, it is ironic that the voices of the citizens are rarely heard and their perception of the organization is almost entirely absent. The second part of the chapter consists of a neo-Weberian argument for perceiving the Little Commonwealth as an organization dominated by paternalistic charismatic authority. As such it was likely to find organizational learning difficult and, on probabilistic grounds, it was more likely to disappear than survive. Probabilities aside, the traces of the Little Commonwealth that survived are mapped and some grounds are adduced for the reasons why Lane remains a potent symbol of a child-centred innovation in a hostile environment.
