Effects of Grading on Student Learning and Alternative Assessment Strategies
Available from: St. Catherine University
See More
Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate what effect an alternative assessment strategy would have on students’ engagement, motivation, and overall learning in an urban, private Montessori middle school program located in the Midwest. Two teachers and 13 students participated in two phases (one social studies and one science unit) over the course of six weeks. Teacher-assigned grades on class and homework were removed and replaced with student-determined final grades based on self-assessment using collaboratively created rubrics and individual portfolios. Students kept daily learning logs and completed a pre- and post-unit survey designed to measure their level of engagement, motivation, and learning preferences. The researcher kept daily observational notes as well as tallies of behavioral markers for engagement and disengagement. Students were also invited to give open-ended feedback about their experience at the end of the intervention. The results showed that while the alternative assessment model did not have a direct impact on students’ daily engagement or intrinsic motivation, it did increase students’ understanding of how their work correlated to a final grade in the unit, and it created opportunities for students to make connections to their learning and thus more actively plan their future work. Additionally, a direct correlation appeared between the level of student activity and student engagement in classes, indicating the importance of reducing passivity as much as possible in the daily learning process.

The Efficacy of Google Slides on Adult Learning Outcomes in a Montessori Teacher Training Center
Available from: St. Catherine University
See More
Abstract/Notes: This action research project investigated how to establish effective instruction and learning tools, specifically, Google Slides within Google Classroom, in an online Montessori Teacher Training Center. Effective instruction includes ways to simulate the positive experiences found in an inperson model, such as community building and collaborative learning. This study investigated training modules, surveys, document collection, and interviews of enrolled adult learners and program instructors. Students and instructors had similar previous experience with Gmail and Google Docs, and less experience with Google Slides. Following the intervention, students reported that Google Slides worked well as an asynchronous learning tool, and the positivity of the impact changed depending on how Google Slides was used. Based on these results, I recommend that instructors incorporate multi-media into Google Slides for both shared and individual use. It is important to consider ways to incorporate group participation in shared Google Slides. Overall, Google Slides is an effective way to engage students in an online setting.

Abstract/Notes: Measurement is a critical aspect of mathematics that affords opportunities for learning while applying and engaging with a host of other mathematical topics (Clements and Bright, 2003, p. xi). Although measurement is a theme that permeates all areas of mathematics as well as day-to-day life, research has shown that many learners find it an aspect of mathematics that is difficult to grasp, with learners often "not understand[ing] the attribute being measured or the units that are used for measurement" (O'Keefe and Bobis, 2008, p. 391). Learners often find particular difficulty in determining the surface area and/or volume of a given object. Van de Walle (2004) argues that when learners are only taught the performance of the skills of a particular procedure at the expense of developing and engaging with the concept itself, they become reluctant to attach meaning to it. This problem poses many challenges for mathematics teachers.
