Abstract/Notes: This study was designed to determine the effect of weekly student-led conferences (both at-home and at-school) on goal setting, goal fulfillment, effort, achievement, intrinsic motivation, and satisfaction. One teacher, eight Montessori third-year lower elementary students, and eight parents participated in the study for six weeks. Baseline data on goal setting and fulfillment was collected and analyzed. Guiding questions designed to encourage and support the students formed the content of the conferences. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were administered. The results showed that while the intervention did not help the students set and fulfill greater quantities of goals, it did have a positive effect on the prioritizing of academic and project-based goals. Communication and relationships between parties also increased, resulting in greater adult awareness of student success and challenge, as well as more supportive adult behavior. Continued research could involve a modified home and school conference format for all lower elementary students.

Teaching Peace: The Effects of Concentrated Interaction with Anti-Racist/Anti-Bias Media on a Montessori Guide's Practice

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this self-study was to examine the effects of concentrated interaction with anti-bias/anti-racist media on a Montessori guide’s practice. It was conducted over a total of six weeks. The intervention included a pre- and post- survey of understanding, nightly media interactions, daily reflection journaling, daily tallies of anti-bias/anti-racist thoughts during the school day, and a daily confidence scale to measure the participant’s confidence to integrate anti-bias/anti-racist concepts into her teaching practice. The study was completed at a private Montessori school in a medium-sized midwestern town, with an early childhood classroom of fifteen three- to five-year-old students of diverse backgrounds. The findings indicate a slight increase in confidence and efficacy for the participant in discussing anti-bias/anti-racist concepts with students, families and colleagues. The findings also point to the strong need for working with other educators and Montessorians for further integrating anti-bias/anti-racist concepts into classroom practice.

Abstract/Notes: Robot-assisted language learning (RALL) is an emerging field of human-robot interaction to support language acquisition and literacy development with a social robot in multi-modal ways. As learning is an inherently social activity, the effectiveness of dyadic and triadic types of social interaction in RALL and child-robot interaction (CRI) needs to be investigated. In early literacy education, the Montessori method is a remarkable child-centered and collaborative learning approach. Bridging these two spaces, our work attempts to examine if the nature of social interaction, dyadic and triadic, affects children’s outcomes in an environment that adheres to the Montessori principles. To this end, we conducted a between-subject design experiment with 33 Kazakh children aged 6–8 to compare the effectiveness of learning Kazakh Latin in the dyadic and triadic conditions in a Moveable Alphabet learning scenario with a social robot. The analyses revealed mixed results for dyadic and triadic conditions in terms of cognitive gains, while emotional engagement was better in the triadic condition. We discuss these results in the perspective of key insights from the current study and implications for future research.
