Debating a Pedagogy Without Talking About Pedagogy: Controversies Around Waldorf in the French General Press

Abstract/Notes: This chapter looks at the reception of Steiner-Waldorf pedagogy in the French general and local press between 2001 and 2021. It takes place in two phases: a period of uncritical curiosity and interest, which turns from 2018 onwards into a series of denunciations and controversies, without any real consideration of the fundamental pedagogical or educational questions: the relationship with anthroposophy, the actual practices of the schools, the training or networks from which these schools recruit, the ethics of the educators. In other words, this reception seems to talk about pedagogy but never really does. This can be explained by the absence of any academic discourse on Steiner in France; as a result, without the support of research, the public debate can only be unprepared to analyse the practices of the schools and their social, human, and sometimes commercial economies, to make a fine distinction between pedagogies, to distinguish between acceptable practices and others that are not, in an otherwise specific legislative context (1905 secularism and the fight against sectarian abuses).

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the lived experiences of 12 classroom teachers in different public Montessori schools in four different geographical regions of the United States. The interview was designed to allow the teachers to describe their Montessorian approach regarding areas of safety, social interaction, and respectful classroom environments to support students who may be experiencing the consequences of childhood trauma. The theories that guided this study were Albert Bandura’s (1977) social cognitive theory and the humanistic or person-centered theory of Carl Rogers (Rogers & Kramer, 1995). These theories facilitated the development of an understanding of fundamental concepts in children’s cognitive, social, and emotional learning and how those are related to classroom behavior concerns. Data were collected via a personal writing prompt and interviews, allowing the teachers to explain how they prepare their classrooms to best support the needs of children who may be dealing with the consequences of childhood trauma. Data were organized into themes to inform teacher preparation programs and ongoing professional development.

Abstract/Notes: The math curriculum of the Montessori system of education for children ages 3–12 is distinctive, incorporating multiple manipulatives and educational practices which have theoretical and empirical support in research. However, studies investigating the math achievement and learning of Montessori students and alumni have not consistently found Montessori programmes to be more effective than conventional or other programmes. Through a detailed review of such studies, we find that a Montessori advantage in math is more likely when programmes adhere to important principles of Montessori education, when students have had longer immersion in Montessori programmes, and when assessments are more conceptual in nature. We suggest that future research should take into account programme fidelity and enrolment duration, and outline other directions for future research.
