Abstract/Notes: María Montessori is one of the most remembered authors of the Active Education. His works have been an important reference for the production of discourse in education and pedagogy in the last century. However, despite its relevance, the work of the Italian has had appropriations that, in many cases, do not coincide with her pedagogical principles, her philosophical foundations, or her conception of the child. This paper proposes a direct review of some of his works, located at different moments of his intellectual production, in order to discuss some of his concepts and ideas.

Abstract/Notes: The introduction of complex mathematical concepts through perceptual and sensorial hands-on experiences is one of the most relevant aspects of the Montessori method proposal. This article aims to investigate the origins of the Montessori’s profound interest for mathematics, studying the history of the education of mathematics, after the unification of Italy, in which her school education took place. Her key concepts and beliefs about the learning of mathematics and, furthermore, the evolution of her proposal will be illustrated through the analysis of her main publications, both the generalist and the specialized ones in the field of mathematics (Psicoaritmetica and Psicogeometria), and handwritten notes about the lessons of XVI° international course, held in Rome in 1931, which the Opera Nazionale Montessori acquired from her students’ archives. Finally, an overview of the actualization of the Montessori method in the contemporary research will be explained, particularly focusing on the neuroscientific discoveries which have proved the effectiveness of the Montessori proposal to empower the cognitive processes involved in the development of mathematical thinking.

Maria Montessori already observed this and integrated appropriate exercises into her pedagogy - »The exercises of practical life« are an integral part of Montessori pedagogy. The exercises in this book help children to successfully master important learning and development processes. The book deals with this topic in detail and presents a large number of exercises that cannot be found in any other book in this abundance. The book is particularly suitable for pedagogical specialists in elementary school and in the field of curative education. But also parents, grandparents, childminders and playgroup leaders find interesting impulses in it.]

Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s work spread throughout the world in a vast number of countries. In Greece, it was first implemented by a pioneer of Montessori education there, Maria Goudeli (formerly, Maria Edelstein) in the 1930’s. The present study aims to unfold the history of Edelstain-Goudeli, while examining the social, political, historical and cultural environment of the time. It is important for the global pedagogical community to investigate how any “alternative” education system is established in a country without any prior experience, especially since to date, the Greek education system has been highly centralised in terms of organisation and administration. Edelstain-Goudeli had to overcome the dominant intellectual traditions, and political and educational institutions in Greece, in order to infuse the Montessori education system into Greek society. The process is situated within the framework of “reception theory” for a scientific theory within a “scientifically peripheral” country. The study also attempts to reveal Edelstain-Goudeli’s personality, as well as identify stimuli and motivations underlying her efforts and decisions.
