Abstract/Notes: Defines work built around a systems view of consumers and producers to characterize work as seen through different cultures as a mingling of enjoyment. Shows how emerging agricultural settlements and cities resulted in families assuming inherited work or labor specialties to be passed to the next generation. Discusses generational concepts of work and play, concluding that maturity may partly determine how much engagement and fulfillment people derive from work. (Author/KB)

Taoism, Teaching, and Learning: A Nature-Based Approach to Education

Holistic education

Abstract/Notes: The ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism contains profound wisdom about the cosmos, nature, human life, and education. Taoism seeks to be in harmony with nature and using it as a guide can help us live in a way that is healing to both ourselves and the planet. Taoism, Teaching, and Learning identifies key aspects of Taoist thought and highlights how these principles can promote a holistic approach to teaching and learning. In particular, this book offers educators guidelines and pedagogical examples for how to instill a perspective of interconnectedness into their classrooms. It sheds light on how Philosophical Taoism articulates a vision of the universe and life that mirrors the actual realities of nature. Providing the frameworks and methods to teaching and learning based on the interconnectedness of life, Taoism, Teaching, and Learning develops an inspiring vision for education and helps us to see our world in a deeply holistic and more meaningful way. / Includes some brief information related specifically to Montessori education as well as other content adjacently related to Montessori education.

Assessing Young Children's Personal Constructs of 'Nature' Using a Modified Repertory Grid Test: A Case Study

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: This paper presents a method for assessing the personal construct systems of young children (ages 4 to 6) regarding the notion of 'nature,' conducted at a Montessori Casa in Toronto, Ontario. Images from the participants' drawings of 'nature' were used in a card sorting exercise and as elements in a modified repertory grid test. Member checking was conducted through recorded conversations with the children throughout the process to minimize the influence of my own construct system. I conducted content analyses of the initial drawings, and made structural measurements and statistical analyses of the card sort and repertory grid data. The limited results indicate that this modified form of repertory grid test is reliable and useful for assessing the structure of young children's construct systems regarding 'nature.' Using Personal Construct Theory may facilitate the development of more participatory, engaging, and effective Environmental Education programs.
