Abstract/Notes: The Center for Music and Rhythm is a very interesting center. In this, children can enter the characters they want, sing songs if they want, and play music on musical instruments if they want. This center can also be used as a corner. But using it as a center gives more positive results.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this final project is to help the staff of the Helsinki English language Montessori Preschool in developing their musical activities. Autumn in the Whisper Woods is a teaching material helping teachers to lead a variety of musical activities in English. ”Autumn in the Whisper Woods – Music at the Montessori Preschool” is a two-part project which consists of a study report and a teaching material. The study report discusses the process of compiling the teaching material and the pedagogical thinking behind it. Autumn in the Whisper Woods is an entity which contains musical material relating to the topic of autumn. It includes six theme-based songs with their motivational stories and illustrations. The material also contains examples and ideas for listening, playing, and leading musical movement. The founding idea of the teaching material is practicality. The material is built so that it is easy for the preschool staff to use it in their work. The material makes leading musical activities possible even for teachers without previous experience in this approach. The teachers of the Helsinki English language Montessori Preschool have not yet tested the teaching material in practice. When the autumn theme is again topical in the autumn of 2009, the staff will start using the material. If the material clearly increases the number of musical activities in the school, it is possible to develop the teaching material further so that it would consist of all four seasons. / Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on auttaa Helsingin Englanninkielisen Montessorileikkikoulun henkilökuntaa kehittämään leikkikoulun musiikkitoimintaa. Autumn in the Whisper Woods –kirjanen on englanninkielinen oppimateriaali, joka antaa mahdollisuuden monipuoliseen musiikkitoiminnan toteuttamiseen. "Autumn in the Whisper Woods –musiikkia Montessorileikkikoulussa" on monimuototyö, joka koostuu raportista ja oppimateriaalista. Raportissa käsitellään mm. oppimateriaaliin johtanutta työprosessia ja pedagogisia lähtökohtia työn taustalla. Oppimateriaali Autumn in the Whisper Woods on kokonaisuus, joka sisältää syksyistä musiikkimateriaalia. Oppimateriaalin lähtökohtana on käytännönläheisyys.

Abstract/Notes: This article describes a teacher's approach of implementing hands-on musical experiences and expanding her repertoire of interesting activities that engage students and instill in them a love of music while remaining true to the philosophy and practice of Montessori education. The author shares her vision of Montessori music education which is a hands-on experience in an organized structure, allowing students to choose independently among different age-appropriate activities. Through active involvement with different materials, designed to teach the scope and sequence of music for the elementary grades, children will learn not only the concepts but also a love of music. Here, she describes her music classroom that looks like a Montessori environment, organized into different centers along the perimeter of the room, with a wide open space in the center for group activities and instruction. The six centers in the music room are: (1) Skill Building; (2) Writing; (3) Exploration; (4) Piano; (5) Drama; and (6) Montessori Bells. Each center and its corresponding tasks and activities are discussed.

Abstract/Notes: This article examines the effects of Montessori music-movement activities on the development of the rhythmic abilities of 59 children from Montessori preschools, aged between 3 and 6 years. Children were deployed into two experimental groups (EG 1 (n = 20) & EG 2 (n = 22)) and a control group (CG) (n = 17). Our intervention consisted of introducing 15 to 20 min of unstructured movement time, either accompanied by a piano (EG 1) or recording (EG 2), three times a week for four months, whereas the control group carried on the usual Montessori program. We used a quasi-experimental nonequivalent groups design with pretest–posttest. Three tests for measuring rhythmic abilities were used: auditory discrimination of the rhythmic patterns, imitation of spoken rhythmic phrases, and determining the synchronization of movement with the rhythm of the music. The interventions had a positive effect on the development of the rhythmic abilities of children included in the study. The most significant effect was noticed in EG 1, while no effect of non-activity was detected in the control group.
