Abstract/Notes: This article represents an amazing reversal of linguistic analysis. Usually Montessori language is translated into "state" terminology. In this case, Sarah Werner Andrews puts state quality assessment terms into Montessori language. For example, domains for school readiness include 1) physical wellbeing and motor development, 2) social and emotional development, 3) approach to learning, 4) language development, 5) cognition and general knowledge. Sarah's use of rich Montessori theory and descriptive language brings Montessori to the essential state keys for expected government proof of quality. [This talk was presented at the NAMTA conference titled "The Social Relevance of the Montessori First Plane: Engaging Families, Building Partnerships, and Finding Common Ground with the Wider Early Childhood Community" in Dallas, TX, January 15-18, 2015.]

Abstract/Notes: Laurie Ewert-Krocker emphasizes the teacher's role in nature's prepared environment. Without directing or controlling the child's work, learning spaces can be maximized for concentration by connecting the adolescent's intrinsic learning to the beauty and order of the natural world. The most artful balance is the global understanding of the interdependent natural systems that can be integrated with the local array of daily detail and responsibilities to allow for the formation of comprehensive community values in the context of purposeful work. Abstract/Notes: Cynthia Castiglione presents Near North Montessori School's (Chicago) adolescent community's approach to technology. Her framework begins with the needs of the adolescent for social independence, social acceptance, and social justice. Using that template, she defines seven keys or characteristics that make up the technological environment: adaptability, social, real, independent, structure, order, safety, beauty, and the role of the guide. Montessori's writings are interspersed with each area to support her orientation. A bibliography is included.
