Abstract/Notes: Laminack and Wadsworth (2012) “believe the single most important thing we can teach our children is kindness” (p. 1). I hoped to teach kindness characteristics to students in my first, second and third-grade classroom, as well as, lessen students’ frequency of unkind behaviors. I utilized Laminack and Wadsworths’ (2012) curriculum Bullying Hurts: Teaching Kindness through Read Alouds and Guided Conversations as my action research focus. Throughout my study, I used a tally chart and observation journal to track the frequency and types of behaviors students demonstrated. Also, students completed a behavioral self-assessment before and after implementation to assess their opinions of their behaviors. Finally, students completed a kindness assessment to demonstrate their views on the effectiveness of the curriculum. Data results show kindness lessons decreased frequency of unkind behaviors and improved students’ personal opinions of themselves. Given the results of my study, kindness curriculum may improve student behaviors in other classrooms.

Abstract/Notes: This reprint of a 1937 conference paper discusses the role of education in bringing about world peace, focusing on the need for a student-centered, nurturing curriculum to replace the authoritarian, teacher-directed curriculum based on punishment and rewards. Argues that greater emphasis needs to be placed on education in all societies. (MDM)

The Case for Mixed-Age Grouping in Early Education

Available from: ERIC

Early childhood education, Nongraded schools

Abstract/Notes: In six brief chapters, mixed-age grouping of young children in schools and child care centers is explored and advocated. Chapter 1 defines mixed-age grouping, examines limitations of single-age grouping, and points out positive characteristics of mixed-age classes. Chapter 2 discusses social development as seen in children's interactions in mixed-age groups. Various studies are cited that focus on how children perceive one another and adapt their behavior and expectations accordingly, how children exhibit specific prosocial behaviors in mixed-age situations, and how children's group participation varies. Chapter 3 reviews studies on the cognitive effects of mixed-age grouping, concluding that psychologists and educators do not yet fully understand how mixed-age interaction affects cognitive development, and calling for more research on the interactive processes involved and the teacher's role in them. Chapter 4 discusses two strategies for mixed-age learning: peer tutoring and cooperative learning. Chapter 5 describes examples of successful implementation of mixed-age programs, including a 2-year kindergarten at the University of Northern Iowa's Malcolm Price Laboratory School, and the Fajans School in Sweden where elementary school-age children were not grouped by age or ability. Chapter 6 addresses four basic questions about implementing mixed-age grouping. A brief section giving conclusions and recommendations is provided, followed by 63 bibliographic citations and appended suggestions for teachers working with mixed-age groups.

Abstract/Notes: The goal of the present study was to investigate the effects of the Montessori educational theory on the field of the early childhood education in terms of the educational philosophy. To do that, the theories including Frobel, Dewey, and Piaget were compared to the Montessori theory as ways to understand its role in the development of the educational theory. The guideline developed by Braun & Edward(1972) was used to compare and analyze the theoreandal components (e.g., a view of children, teachers, and learning) in each theory. The major findings of this study and suggestions for the further study were discussed.
