Abstract/Notes: In recent years, educators and workforce experts have been seeing a consensus that the new generation needs the improved skills of the 21st century. Without these skills, it is thought that the new generation cannot successfully participate in the global economy and cannot be prepared enough for the university and business life. In this study, the effectiveness of Montessori Education Approach was evaluated in the acquisition of 21st century skills. An early childhood model proposal was developed by identifying the aspects of this education method, which began a century ago and continued to be developed until 1952, and which is still valid today, are similar to 21st century skills. The 21st century skills that the P21 platform categorized and divided into themes were based on. Matching expressions of 21st century skills and principles in Montessori education were examined. The findings obtained revealed a total of 963 matching expressions of the 21st century skills and the Montesoori education approach. The fact that the Montessori method, which cannot be widely used in our country due to its financial dimension, can be placed in the National Education pre-school education program, may be the correct model, and other modern education methods (Experiential education), High-Scope Regio-Emillia Sweden Program (Whariki) are evaluated and our education system It has been suggested that the most appropriate pre-school education model should be prepared urgently.

Abstract/Notes: Montessori pedagogy is a pedagogical concept that was created by Maria Montessori, and is based on anthropology and scientific observation of the natural learning process of children. It is recognizable by its prepared environment with didactic shaped material that provide children an independent realization of knowledge. Although the concept was formed at the beginning of the 20th century, it is a pedagogical approach that still adequately responds to the developmental needs of children and overcome the disadvantages of the traditional educational system focused on the teacher. The aim of this study was to determine the opinions that students of teaching studies have on Montessori pedagogy considering their study. The study was conducted on an intentional sample of students from the Faculty of Philosophy in Split, the department of teacher education and the department of pedagogy. The results showed that students, dependent on their study, differ in knowledge about Montessori pedagogy and valuation of the desirability of the traditional education, while there is no difference in attitudes towards Montessori pedagogy and in valuation of the desirability of the education based on independence, play and the satisfaction of knowledge. Pedagogy students had several courses where they gained knowledge about Montessori pedagogy and had experience visiting Montessori institutions where they experienced the application of these pedagogical principles in practice, while students from the department of teacher education haven't had such experiences and they were less familiar with the Montessori pedagogy during their study. That reflected on some of their attitudes. The existing of a positive attitude towards Montessori pedagogy regardless of the level of knowledge about this conception leads to the conclusion that the connotations they have about the Montessori pedagoy are positive, which supports the hypothesis of a positive image of the concept not only among many experts, but also among lay people.

Abstract/Notes: Schools following the Montessori method use individual and small-group teaching methods and hands-on, concrete materials to provide a basis for deep learning of mathematical concepts. Schools with a mostly traditional approach to mathematics teaching mainly use large-group lecture methods with little use of manipulative materials. This study investigated the understanding of place value concepts and abilities of Montessori students by comparing task responses of 93 students in grades 1-3 in a Montessori school (n=47) and in a mostly traditional comparison school (n=46). Data collection included clinical interviews with each student. The theoretical framework used in the study was taken from Zoltan Dienes, a mathematician, who believed that mathematics is learned and created by forming layers of abstract generalizations. Interview tasks were both gathered from the literature and created by the researcher. Procedural tasks included those that asked students to count, to identify the value of digits in a number, and to use the standard addition algorithm for multidigit numbers. Conceptual tasks included those that required students to solve two-digit addition and missing addend questions with and without materials and to solve word problems involving three- and four-digit numbers. Some tasks included large numbers into the thousands because Dienes' framework calls for increasingly abstract generalizations, which for place value means larger and larger numbers.
