Abstract/Notes: COVID–19 has forced preschools to resort to online education. While traditional schools have got adjusted to online teaching quickly, Montessori schools could not turn to online easily. Montessori education is considered to be impossible to offer through online mode to children at home, due to the lack of the prepared classroom, didactic materials and trained parents who could support children’s development. The current research presents an action research with an aim to convert Montessori education to online mode and develop a model for offering Montessori education online to the children between 2½ and 5 ½ years of age providing activity to the hands and senses and discusses the limitations and implications.

Available from: St. Catherine University

Abstract/Notes: Independence is a skill that everyone needs to possess in order to function in society (Montessori, 1918). The study was designed to see if Grace and Courtesy lessons would help increase independence skills in elementary children. The study took place in a Montessori classroom of 35 children, aged 6-9 years old. The researcher used tally marks to calculate how often the children asked adults for help with tasks that they already knew how to perform. The researcher also tallied how often the children would perform the task after being reminded one time. Observations were done daily and the observation sheets indicated how many children were not focused on a task and when the concepts in the Grace and Courtesy lessons were being used. The study showed that there was a decrease in asking adults for help and an increase in the use of Grace and Courtesy lessons throughout the research period.

Data is obtained by the process that questions in semi-structured interview form developed by researcher have been asked to teachers. Open-ended questions have been posed to teachers in order to identify under which situations it is difficult/easy to arouse curiosity, which activities/topics are easy/difficult for arousing curiosity, and specific strategies for arousing curiosity in children. Study findings indicates that for arousing curiosity in children, Montessori teachers apply sensitive observation, prepared environment, free choice, special attention, attention polarisation-concentration and sensitive phases principles.
