Abstract/Notes: The subject of the article is the role of nature in learning as an essential part of the Montessori Philosophy in early childhood education. This article highlights the use of nature-based activities within Montessori’s pedagogical perspective for including content about the natural world in early childhood settings. In this paper, it is aimed to increase the awareness of learning through nature on child development and to disseminate nature-based practices used in line with the Montessori approach in preschools. Firstly, the role of nature as an educational tool is described, followed by an understanding of nature pedagogy and its educational value according to Maria Montessori. Additionally, the article reviews the implementation of nature-based learning activities as an integral part of the educational work in Montessori schools. In this educational stream, nature-related work stands as the main methodical means for early childhood education and supporting the development of children. Nature in itself serves as a kind of special resonance and restorative effect that can help children understand the world and impart meaning to their lives. Subsequently, recommendations for nature-based practices that can be applied in preschools were presented in light of the Montessori philosophy.  Article visualizations:

[Concerns about the low level of curiosity have recently become the starting point of this research. Knowing the effect of literacy based on the Montessori approach to children's curiosity at the age of seven is the goal of this study. For this reason, the pretest posttest non equivalent group design was used as a research method. A total of 17 class IB children from SD Kanisius Sorowajan Yogyakarta were involved as a sample for the Montessori group and 17 class IA children as a sample for the control class. The research findings show that a literacy program based on the Montessori approach influences children's curiosity. Statistical tests showed differences in posttest-pretest scores for the Montessori group ( M = 1.0229,SE = 0.15003) higher than the control group ( M = 0.0076, SE = 0.03251). The difference is significant with t (17.499) = 6.614 and p = 0.000 ( p <0.05). The magnitude of the effect obtained is r = 0.8451 which is included in the "big effect" category which is equivalent to 71.43%. The learning effectiveness test in the Montessori class with an N-gain score was 55.98% which was in the "medium effectiveness" category, while in the control class it was 0.42% which was included in "low effectiveness".]

That'll Teach You: A Humanistic Reconstructionist Approach to the Project-Based Educations of the Companions of Doctor Who

Abstract/Notes: From the early 1900s through the 1950s, child-centered and humanistic theories of education were developed and disseminated from hubs of progressive educational theorization. Based on the resultant educational reforms of the 1960s, humanistic approaches to education became popular in schools throughout the United States. Concurrently, and perhaps not coincidentally, while these theories were being developed, Doctor Who was conceived and promoted as an educational television series for young learners throughout Britain. This essay posits that, consciously or inadvertently experimenting with progressive new pedagogical models, the Doctor and his series of companions present a complementary union of potentially opposing pedagogical approaches. While the Doctor’s lessons tend to be pedantic in nature and substance, the companions’ efforts to absorb the Doctor’s demonstrated teachings, relating that message to the audience, make episodes humanistic learning experiences for the viewer. By presenting dilemmas confronted and varyingly resolved by companions of the Doctors show-run by Russell Davies and Steven Moffat, this essay illustrates each companion’s personal struggles and attempts to understand and assimilate the Doctor’s lessons into an expanding worldview or moral truth that parallels and elicits the viewer’s—who occupies the silent, observant position of novice companion, or neophyte as acolyte—empathetically vicarious experiences.

Montessoriterapins Preventiva Aspekt / The Preventive Aspect of Montessori-Based Therapy

Available from: Taylor and Francis Online

Pages: 153-159

Abstract/Notes: The child psychiatric ward at Aurora Hospital, Helsinki, has since 1977 experimentally used the Montessori method in therapy groups of 5–13 year old children. Those who have benefited most are children with neurological „soft signs”: insufficient visual, auditive or spatial perceptual ability, clumsiness, hyperactivity, emotionally impulsive or immature or speech retarded children. A surprise for the Montessori therapists was that even children with borderline type contact and reality disturbances were able to benefit—however, the treatment in these cases required more time.
