Abstract/Notes: Developmental observations in ten young children with Williams syndrome (1-6 years old) are presented from developmental tests, symbolic play sessions and play sessions with a special educator following the non-directive Montessori approach. There is a considerable individual variability in performance. Overall, the children are engaged in goal-directed activities for more than 35% of the time during play sessions. Overactivity and distractability seem to be more age-dependent and situation-specific than thought before. Developmental interventions may include play sessions following the Montessori approach. Abstract/Notes: Presented are case histories of two Down's Syndrome (Mosaic form) 6- and 10-year-old girls who attended regular Montessori classes. General characteristics of Down's Syndrome and other retarded children are reviewed and compared with the two girls' growth and development (according to Piaget's proposed stages). The Montessori emphasis on sensorial activities and on individual freedom to choose tasks is seen to enhance the retarded child's development. Analyzed are the girl's progress in such skill areas as language, reading, and math. The children are said to be functioning in Piaget's preconceptual and intuitive stages. Emphasized is the need for an approach which includes raised social and academic expectations along with instruction in independence and self-direction. An appendix lists suggested Montessori materials and activities for handicapped children.

Behavior Patterns of Mildly Retarded Children in Open Classrooms

Abstract/Notes: The classroom behavior and academic achievement of 32 educable retarded children (EMR) with a mean age of 11.24 years were studied in two types of open classrooms, graded and multi-age, and compared to that in a special education class. The three different instructional environments were found to generate characteristically different patterns of classroom behavior over a four-month interval as measured by time-sampling procedures. The results generally supported the assumption that open-space, integrated classrooms facilitate greater social interaction on the part of EMR students. The frequency of task-relevant behavior was higher in the special education class compared to that found in the two open classrooms. All three groups of EMR children made comparable gains in academic achievement. (Author)

Abstract/Notes: Conducted a 2-year observational study of a total of 81 lower- and middle-class 3-6 year olds to examine the behavior of young children in school settings which program all or part of the day as "free play" time. Results indicate that with age, children became more effective in moving from one activity to another; they spent less time in transition and longer periods in activity. Behaviors exhibited while in transition became less dependent on the immediate surrounding and seemed to indicate more autonomy. Lower-class boys had shorter activity lengths and more transitions than the other groups. A qualitative description of children's transition behavior is presented and possible implications of the findings for developmental and educational research are discussed.
