Abstract/Notes: Dr. Maria Montessori opened the first Casa dei Bambini (Childrens House) on 6 January 1907 in San Lorenzo, Rome. Through her observations and work with these children she discovered their astonishing, almost effortless ability to learn. Thus began a century of great work uncovering the true nature of childhood. Times have changed, and science has made great progress, and so has our work; but our principles have only been confirmed, and along with them our conviction that mankind can hope for a solution to its problems, among which the most urgent are those of peace and unity, only by turning its attention and energies to the discovery of the child and to the development of the great potentialities of the human personality in the course of its formation. Abstract/Notes: En un mundo como el de los arquitectos, fuertemente condicionado por normativas, leyes y, en la mayoría de los casos, excesiva premura en las fechas de entrega, es habitual olvidar que la arquitectura tiene un fin: la gente. En ese contexto, en la década de los 60, figuras como el holandés Herman Hertzberger, cuestionaron los procesos de proyecto existentes hasta la fecha, y mostraron su preocupación por aspectos relativos a las personas, como las relaciones sociales, la percepción espacial, o las necesidades variables de privacidad y colectividad. Acciones realizadas para determinar tipologías de edificios, como habitar, trabajar o estudiar, comenzaron a ser observadas desde un punto de vista diferente. El edificio de oficinas Centraal Beheer, en Apeldoorn, o la Montessori School en Delft , ambos diseñados por Hertzberger en 1967 y 1960 respectivamente, son sus dos mejores ejemplos. Estas obras reinventan e incentivan las posibilidades de relación de sus usuarios: multiplicando las funciones de objetos y lugares, dando un nuevo uso a las zonas de transición bajo el concepto de in-between, e incluyendo a las personas en el nacimiento de la arquitectura. Este es el punto de partida de este trabajo, que se inicia con una investigación sobre los conceptos clave de la metodología de Hertzberger y finaliza con una selección de sus obras. Los casos de estudio se apoyan con ejemplos actuales, con la intención de contrastar la evolución y pervivencia de sus arquetipos. / In the architect’s world, strongly conditioned by rules, laws and, in most of the cases, by unreasonable haste on the deadlines, it is often forgotten that architecture has a purpose: the people. In that context, in the 60s, architects like the Dutch Herman Hertzberger, questioned the existing project processes until then, and showed their concern about aspects related to persons, such as social relationships, space perception, or the variable needs of privacy and collectivity. Actions daily associated to determine building typologies, such as living, working, or studying, started to be perceived from a different point of view. The office building of Centraal Beheer, in Apeldoorn, or the Montessori School in Delft, both designed by Hertzberger in 1967 and 1960 respectively, are the two best examples. These pieces reinvent and stimulate the relationship opportunities of their inhabitants: they multiply the functions of objects and places, by offering a new use to the transition zones -with the “in-between” concept-, and by involving people in the birth of the architecture. This is the starting point of this dissertation, which begins with a research about the key concepts of Hertzberger’s methodology and ends up with a selection of his best buildings. Study cases are implemented with other contemporary cases, in order to confirm the evolution and permanence of his archetypes. / En un món com el dels arquitectes, fortament condicionat per normatives, lleis i, en la majoria dels casos, excessiva urgència en les dates de lliurament, és habitual oblidar que l’arquitectura té un fi: la gent. En aquest context, a la dècada dels 60, figures com l’holandès Herman Hertzberger, van qüestionar els processos de projecte existents fins a la data, i van mostrar la seva preocupació per aspectes relatius a les persones, com les relacions socials, la percepció espacial, o les necessitats variables de privacitat i col·lectivitat. Accions realitzades per determinar tipologies d’edificis, com habitar, treballar o estudiar, van començar a ser observades des d’un punt de vista diferent. L’edifici d’oficines Centraal Beheer, a Apeldoorn, o la Montessori School a Delft, tots dos dissenyats per Hertzberger en 1967 i 1960 respectivament, són els seus dos millors exemples. Aquestes obres reinventen i incentiven les possibilitats de relació dels seus usuaris: multiplicant les funcions d’objectes i llocs, donant un nou ús a les zones de transició sota el concepte d’in-between, i incloent a les persones en el naixement de l’arquitectura. Aquest és el punt de partida d’aquest treball, que s’inicia amb una investigació sobre els conceptes clau de la metodologia de Hertzberger i finalitza amb una selecció de les seves obres. Els casos d’estudi s’ajuden d’exemples actuals, amb la intenció de contrastar l’evolució i pervivència dels seus arquetips.
