Abstract/Notes: Recognizing the inherent attention in examining how educational practices affect our future, there is little known about society's demands related to early childhood education. This paper aims to analyze the current preschool enrolment situation in the Euro-Western world and the demands of society, focusing attention on the characteristics needed in the prepared environment and in teacher training practices that inclusive education offers. Different socio-cultural theories have been analyzed, and practices regarding human development have been presented as they guarantee an integral development of the child, one which respects infant developmental stages and offers the right scaffolding and environment to stimulate a child's interest and potential. All these aspects are claimed in society, and are reflected in the Montessori Pedagogy principles, where thanks to the observation and knowledge regarding children's needs, educators can prepare stimulating environments that lead to personal formative development.

Abstract/Notes: This paper attempts to examine how Montessori understood children in the context of eugenics from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Based on that examination, this paper also studies why the scientist Montessori became an educator.In the context of eugenics, scientists generally agreed to the recapitulation theory. They Believed that people's physical sizes and shapes correlated with their levels of morality. They also believed that it was possible to judge the levels of the morality of people by measuring their bodily degenerations. This belief led the scientists to the reform of society. In fact, many of social reforms were performed through sterilizations and eugenic marriages.Montessori also agreed to the recapitulation theory. She thought that it was possible to judge the levels of morality of children by measuring their bodily degenerations. However, she did not intend to reform society by sterilizations. She considered degenerations of children as diseases that can be healed and intended to reform society by treating or improving children, as the Italian school in Anthropology did. Montessori's recognition of the curability in children led her from a scientist to an educator.

Abstract/Notes: Since the Meiji era, various educational methods from overseas have been introduced to Japan, implemented, and "adapted" to the country's educational environment. In this study, we examined possible issues that could arise when introducing educational methods developed in different cultures to our country. The purpose of this paper is to find the factors that cause adaptation or changes to the educational methods developed overseas during the localizing process in Japan. In our country, more diversity in education methods and content is called for as well as a quantitative increase in childhood education, but practicing educators seek for improvement in the qualitative side of education. In this study, we aim to present the findings to the educators in Japan for further meaningful consideration as we feel that a wide variety of viewpoints are possible when studying education methods from overseas based on different cultures and ideas. This study, a reconstruction of the symposium from the 65th meeting of the Japan Society of Research on Early Childhood Care and Education, also aims to set a new perspective for further research of this theme. This study comprises of three parts: localization of the Froebel Gifts and children's plays, Italian society in which Montessori education is widespread and the current situation in Japan, and the differences in attitude between the government or management of childcare facilities that introduce foreign educational methods and practicing nursery teachers. We attempt,in this study, to consider the issues around the localization of educational methods from overseas as a matter that affects not only the practicing nursery teachers but the education of nursery teachers, by presenting a wide variety of opinions and ideas from members of the Japan Society of Research on Early Childhood Care and Education based on their own research over many years.

Abstract/Notes: A. Šiame straipsnyje Kauno seserys benediktinės pristatomos kaip visuomenės ugdytojos. Jų ugdomoji veikla suklestėjo 1918–1940 m. Lietuvoje. Kauno visuomenė vertino seserų benediktinių ugdomąją veiklą, kurioje buvo taikoma tuo metu nauja ir moderni M. Montessori pedagogikos sistema. Atliekant tyrimą, naudotasi dar niekur nepublikuotais šaltiniais, padėjusiais atskleisti seserų benediktinių ugdomąją veiklą ne tik Kaune, bet ir įvairiose Lietuvos vietovėse: Joniškyje, Pasvalyje, Čiobiškyje, Prienuose, Ariogaloje, Čekiškėje, Šiluvoje, Vilniuje ir Pernavoje. Ši veikla buvo susijusi su vienuolyno plėtra, naujų skyrių steigimu. Seserys ne tik prisidėjo prie visuomenės ugdymo nuoširdžia apaštališkąja veikla, taip atsiliepdamos į to laiko reikmes, bet ir atrado dirbdamos ugdomąjį darbą naujas benediktiniškojo gyvenimo formas. [This paper presents the Sisters Benedictines of Kaunas as educators of the society, whose educational activities flourished from 1918 to 1940 in Lithuania. Kaunas society appreciated the educational activities of the Benedictine Sisters, which used the new and modern pedagogical system of M. Montessori at that time. During the research, unpublished sources were used, which helped to compile and present, in order to achieve the set aim, educational activities in Kaunas and, based on the development of the monastery, the establishment of new departments, to highlight educational activities in various areas of Lithuania. The Benedictine Sisters were sent everywhere as educators and educators who applied the most upto-date and modern Montessori pedagogical system of the time. Having the necessary preparation, this pedagogical system was applied by the Benedictine Sisters working with children not only in Kaunas as the first nun educators, to whom the first state primary school was opened at the request of the monastery society, but also in the kindergartens established by them in Joniskis, Pasvalys, Zasliai, as well as in the transferred to lead children’s shelter in Ciobiškis, and a kindergarten in Prienai. Most of the sisters worked in different kindergartens: educators and leaders, there were sr. Gabriele Spokaite and sr. Apolonija Salčiute. Non-formal education was provided in other established sections of the monastery. The Sisters prepared children for the First Confession and Communion in Ariogala and the Cekiškes. The Benedictine Sisters cared of the church and took care of the old people in Siluva. The Sisters engaged in self-education or educated others in Vilnius. And there is no knowledge about any educational activity in Pernava, but during the ten years of the opening of this monastery branch, one or another educational activity had to be carried out.]

Teaching to Be American: The Quest for Integrating the Italian-American Child

Abstract/Notes: In the early years of the twentieth century, the great structural, social and cultural changes in American society included a growing number of immigrants arriving from the poorest regions of Europe. For the first time, the issues of immigration, assimilation and social integration became the most important problems facing American society. In the optimistic climate of the so-called progressive era, social reformers thought that these problems could be solved by the science of pedagogy, as applied to the educational needs of foreign immigrants. This essay centres on the pedagogical efforts of Italian-American educator Angelo Patri, who attempted to integrate Italian-American children into the fabric of American society through education. It starts by assessing Patri’s early writings, such as A Schoolmaster of the Great City, and his private and professional papers. In doing so, his work is situated in the debate on progressive education alongside pedagogue Maria Montessori, demonstrating his central role in the debate on integration through education. Within this analysis, particular attention is paid to the notion of learning by doing, and it is argued that both educators were influenced by this particular aspect of progressive education.

Abstract/Notes: The emerging knowledge societies will – besides many other dramatic changes – see a teaching revolution. This paper seeks to propose quality standards for this new type of teaching. The paper argues that Peter Drucker experienced much of what he later came to call the principles of self management and effective knowledge work as a boy aged nine or ten at the Schwarzwald School – an utterly exceptional, progressive elementary school in Vienna. Given these astonishing similarities, this school's avant‐garde approach to teaching might just provide some insights into what effective teaching for a future knowledge society should be like. The paper is based to a large extent on accounts by and about the almost forgotten school's owner‐manager Eugenie Schwarzwald, some of which were made available only recently in the course of several biographical research projects dealing with this revolutionary pedagogue and social entrepreneur. Firstly, the paper identifies similarities between the teaching practice at Eugenie Schwarzwald's schools, her approach to leadership on the one hand, and Drucker's principles of effective management and knowledge work on the other. Secondly, it concludes that in a knowledge society both effective management and teaching need to be extensively individualised services – much more than in an industrial mass society. Combined, Schwarzwald's practice and Drucker's teachings challenge some seemingly up‐to‐date practices in both higher education and corporate personnel development, and helps in understanding what actually produces effective personal learning for the rapidly changing knowledge economies of the twenty‐first century. The paper introduces selective aspects of progressive education to the field of management.
