Abstract/Notes: Methods Must Be Adapted to Individual Needs Is Discovery That Has Made Italian Dotoressa World Famous -- the Beginning and Development of Her Work Described by Miss Ellen Yale Stevens. "What is the the Montessori method? It is the playhouse school, the school where the rudiments of work-a-day knowledge seep into the juvenile brain; the school in which educators from one end of the world to the other have been interested and which, wherever its principles have been carried, has remained as the initial step in an epoch of child development."

The Perfect Storm of Challenging Students: Fifteen Strategies to Support the Socio-Emotional Learning and Education of the Whole Learner

Available from: IGI Global

Book Title: Multifaceted Strategies for Social-Emotional Learning and Whole Learner Education

Pages: 211-245

Abstract/Notes: This chapter explores 15 strategies being employed at various public military charter schools across the United States to support the socio-emotional learning and education of the whole learner. These research-based strategies are intended to overcome and vanquish the adverse childhood experiences (identified in a Kaiser health study), various forms of trauma, and typical “at risk” factors so common amongst families who tend to choose public military academies in the hopes these schools will “fix” the many challenges their children face. Through a careful examination of each strategy (including its research basis and benefits and challenges), the author provides a glimpse into a possible formula other public and private schools might consider employing to meet the socio-emotional and educational needs of students impacted by a cacophony of life's challenges.

Abstract/Notes: This Action Research Project examined the impact of role-play on preschoolers’ self-regulation development in a Montessori primary classroom. The class consisted of 18 students; ages 3-5 years old. Four of the nine students in the intervention had delays, disruptions, or modifications to their Montessori experience, possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Role-play scenarios were performed by the students for four weeks. The results show that role-play positively impacted self-regulation in the primary classroom. The average percentage of self-regulated behaviors increased by 28.5% from the pre-intervention week through the last intervention week. Modeling of self-regulated behaviors increased, and modeling of dysregulated behaviors decreased during the intervention. Role-play is a fun and engaging way to help young children learn, practice, and model self-regulated behaviors in the classroom.

Abstract/Notes: Focusing on the transnational circulation of ideas about suffrage and education, this article explores the work of suffragist Muriel Matters (1877–1969), and teacher educator Lillian de Lissa (1885–1967). It begins with Matters’ and de Lissa’s childhoods and education in post-suffrage Australia, and their initial work as an actress and kindergarten teacher respectively. The second section focuses on the development of their politics when Matters migrated to England in 1905 and joined the Women’s Freedom League, and de Lissa became the foundation principal of the Adelaide Kindergarten Training College in 1907. The third section discusses their engagement with Maria Montessori’s educational approach, which Matters incorporated into her socialist feminist activism during the First World War, and which led to de Lissa’s recruitment to England as a liberal feminist teacher educator in 1917. The final section highlights their advocacy for Montessori education in the United Kingdom during the interwar years.
