Abstract/Notes: In lyrical prose, Jim Webster lays out his view on the universal human use of tools and how "humans meet the practical demands of life." Webster lauds physical work and the work of the hand as they both support engagement, social cooperation, a deepening of relationships, and sustainability. Practical work is valuable and is plentiful as it generates reciprocal community, dignity, self-awareness, and provides opportunity by giving comfort, refining skills, expressing creative insight, and imparting a sense of gratitude. Abstract/Notes: Larry Schaefer's history of civility is a succinct summary of the implicit and evolving definitions of civility over 2500 years of civilization. Beginning with the Romans and the root word "civitas," meaning the rights and duties of citizenship, civility appears in classical literature as integral to the roots of democracy in the context of assembly. In the middle ages, civility referred to proper conduct and later became a courtly term then moved into the Renaissance as a focus on communities and the social celebration of human achievement. This researched overview of the history of civility constructs a broad definition of the term through historical phases and establishes civility as a universal human characteristic. Abstract/Notes: In this interview conducted at the NAMTA conference, "Observation: The Key to Unlocking the Child's Potential", Molly O'Shaughnessy discusses the history of observation with Hilla Patell. Patell shares stories of the people who were instrumental in creating a culture of observation as an ongoing discipline to be practiced. She goes on to talk about some of the keys to understanding and practicing observation, including the child's concentration, the need to rid ourselves of preconceptions, and how to look for obstacles that impede a child's development. She tells us that as observers we must stay in the present and have "faith in the human spirit." Abstract/Notes: Dr. Maria Montessori was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree. While working with handicapped children, she developed educational methods that allowed them to pass national proficiency tests. With this success, she then generalized her techniques to other young children, and the method came to be known as the Montessori Method of education. This paper addresses the history of the Method's arrival and implementation in America, and the future outlook of the Method in the public sector given recent educational trends. Using the historical research method, material was compiled, verified, organized, and synthesized from hundreds of primary and secondary sources to create a coherent depiction of the Montessori movement in America from 1912 until 2005.
