Teacher-Student Interaction in a Mexican Montessori School: Exploring the Construction of Gender Identity in Young Children
Available from: McGill University - eScholarship
See More
Abstract/Notes: The present study is centered on understanding the gender concepts teachers have, and the form in which their gender perspective is related to the way teachers of a Mexican Montessori elementary school interact with their students according to the child's gender in the early elementary school years. The type of messages teachers are sending to children when they are in the classroom in relation to the concepts of masculinity and feminity are discussed. The analysis is rooted in qualitative research methodology and the gender category. Gender is seen as a social phenomenon. The paper deals with the work that has been done in gender and schools, especially related to the role teachers have when dealing with gender in the classroom. It discusses how a different method of education, in this case the Montessori method, differs from the traditional system of education when dealing with gender issues. The way teachers deal with gender issues at school is deeply connected to the viewpoint of gender they have. The narratives of the teachers help us understand this relation. It is hoped that by examining their own practice toward gender issues teachers will take a first step towards a non-sexist education. It is true that the Montessori system breaks from many of the conventional gender-biased practices of traditional schools; even so, a total change cannot be seen until our own perspectives on gender evolve.

Araştırmanın bağımlı değişkeni motor gelişimdir. Bağımsız değişkeni ise Montesori eğitimi alma, kırsal bölgede okul öncesine devam etme ve cinsiyettir. Araştırmanın evrenini 2013-2014 eğitim öğretim yılında Konya İl Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğüne bağlı resmi- özel anaokulu ve anasınıflarına devam eden 5 yaş öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu Konya İl Milli Eğitim Müdürlüğüne bağlı resmi - özel anaokulu ve anasınıflarından Kandil Şehit Ersan Şeker İlkokulu anasınıfından 25 öğrenci, Selçuk Üniversitesi İhsan Doğramacı Uygulama Anaokulundan Montessori eğitimi alan 15 öğrenci seçilmiştir. Çocukların motor gelişim becerileri "LOS KF 18" ölçeği ile ölçülmüştür. Motor gelişim ölçeğinden elde edilen puanlara bağımsız değişkenlerin etkisi SPSS 18. versiyonu ile incelenmiştir. Araştırmanın bulguları aşağıda sıralanmıştır. 1. Montessori eğitimi alan 5 yaş çocukların motor gelişim beceri puan ortalamaları ile kırsal bölgede okul öncesine devam eden 5 yaş çocuklarının motor gelişim beceri puan ortalamaları arasında anlamlı bir fark bulunamamıştır. (P>0.05) 2. Kız çocukların motor gelişimleri ile erkek çocukların motor gelişimleri arasında önemli düzeyde fark yoktur. (P>0.05) 3. Montessori eğitimi alan kız çocuklarının motor gelişim puan ortalamaları ile erkek çocuklarının motor gelişim puan ortalamaları arasında anlamlı düzeyde fark olmadığı görülmüştür. (P>0.05) 4. Kırsal bölgede okul öncesine devam eden kız çocuklarının motor gelişim puan ortalamaları ile erkek çocuklarının motor gelişim puan ortalamaları arasında anlamlı düzeyde fark olmadığı görülmüştür. (P>0.05) / In this study, the five age children who studied at pre-school in rural life and who educated with Montessori method were compared. The dependent variant of the study is motor development skill of children the independent voriant of this study is education of Montessori, the pre-school education of rural life and gender. The scope of the study were compared of the students who were attending country and private pre-schools placed in Konya durig 2013-2014 education season and the students were at the age of five. As a sample model, 25 students from Kandil Şehit Ersan Şeker primary school, and 15 students from Selçuk University, were selected using examplification in Konya. The motor devolopment capacity of children was measured by "LOS KF 18" The effects of independent variables on avarage motor development points were investigated with SPSS 18. Method. The datum acquired from this study are summarized below in order: 1. There are no difference between the five age children who educated with Montessori method and who studied at pre-school in rural life. (P>0.05) 2. There is a difference between motor devolopment capacity, it is not of boys and girls in the motor devolopMent capacity, it is not important. (P>0.05) 3. Abstract/Notes: Three things tell me that Montessori education is building a better world. In Montessori classrooms, we help children develop the attitude that they can do things for themselves. We demonstrate a culturally responsive pedagogy to invite empathy and belonging. And we present a global view to the children to inspire respect and love for the whole world...

Montessori for the New Millennium: Practical Guidance on the Teaching and Education of Children of All Ages, Based on A Rediscovery of the True Principles and Vision of Maria Montessori

Abstract/Notes: Although Montessori's name is almost universally known in education circles today, and there are countless nursery schools throughout the world using the "Montessori Method," the real core of her thinking has remained largely misunderstood. Most people regard the method as a system for the education of very young children. And most who have some direct experience of it, either as parent or teacher, would regard it as involving a certain set of procedures and specialized educational materials with clear and elaborate instructions for their use. However, the essence of Montessori's philosophy of education is in reality far broader than this, and contains a powerful message for educators everywhere. What is less well-known about Montessori's work is that she began by establishing the effectiveness of her approach at the pre-elementary level, but also strongly encouraged the extension of her method to the higher levels of education. Wentworth's purpose in writing this book is to elucidate this vital aspect of Maria Montessori's life's work and to show how it applies to real-life teaching situations. She believed that by transforming the process of children's education she could help to transform the attitudes of the adults they will later become, and so those of society and the world at large--a message she promoted as vitally relevant to the future of humankind as a whole.

The Role of the Child Care Worker in the Treatment of Severely Burned Children

Abstract/Notes: Experience with 57 children suggests that the physical and psychological rehabilitation of severely burned children is promoted in a positive and child-oriented environment. It has also suggested that the child care worker, functioning as an integral member of the burn team, can help establish a more peaceful relationship between the child and his environment and insulate him, by means of repeated positive encounters, from the threatening and often seemingly hostile world around him, while preparing him eventually to meet it. Thus, the child care worker can offer to the child the critical support and understanding needed throughout the long period of hospitalization by helping create a more normal and child-centered environment.
