Strategies to Support Classroom Integration Among New Elementary Montessori Students: Qualitative Case Study

Available from: ProQuest - Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: Elementary students transferring from traditional education classrooms to a Montessori school lack executive function skills (EFS) and struggle with academic performance and disrupt classes. The specific problem is the lack of strategies and support from school administrators to address an overwhelming number of new elementary Montessori students needing EFS improvement. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to explore teachers' and school administrators' perceptions of strategies to support teachers regarding EFS development among new Montessori students in grades first through sixth in a single Southwestern Montessori school. The theoretical framework was primarily Vygotsky's social constructionism. The research question involved: What are teachers' and school administrators' perceptions regarding strategies used to support teachers in developing EFS among new Montessori students in grades first through sixth in a Southwestern Montessori school? The sample included four administrators, eight classroom teachers, and four student support teachers. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted, and 2 focus groups were employed: 1 for administrators, and a separate 1 for teachers/support personnel. Findings indicated the need for improved vetting of potential students during the admission process, additional classroom resources, and improvements to the parental education module. Future research is needed to explore the potential for an issue-based strategic planning model to foster collaboration between school administration and teachers.

Abstract/Notes: This action research project aimed to examine the effects introducing picture-based work plans would have on independence in a Primary Montessori classroom. The intervention took place over seven weeks and involved a middle-class suburban classroom with 25 children ages three to six-years old. Data was collected through the use of tally sheets which recorded the number of times children asked for suggestions; tables which recorded the number of children engaged in meaningful work; an observation log for observations taken globally; and a field journal which recorded the researcher’s thoughts, questions, and other observations at the time. The data showed a decrease in overall productivity in the classroom, with less children engaging in meaningful work overall. There was also a decrease in children asking for suggestions. Research should continue to examine if using work plans with older children would be beneficial.

Increasing Concentration Through Multistep Practical Life Works in a Montessori 2-6 Classroom

Available from: St. Catherine University

Abstract/Notes: This intervention was intended to combat apathy and disengagement in a preschool Montessori classroom. Four traditional Practical Life tasks were introduced to 15 students, dusting the shelves, sweeping the floor, carpet sweeping, and mopping the floor. These tasks required many different types of movement to complete. The intention was to test Dr. Montessori’s assertions that movement is essential for early brain development. The research took place in an urban Montessori and included 15 participants. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected over a four-week period. At the end of the intervention, findings indicated that their ability to concentrate increased after the children engaged in the four tasks. After given the opportunity for both small and large motor movement, children are able to work independently with a greater success rate.

Abstract/Notes: This study explored how teachers have adapted the Montessori method in Saudi early childhood classrooms to align with Saudi socio-culture and Islamic practices. The study was framed using the socio-cultural theory. A qualitative multi-case study design was used to collect data from semi-structured interviews and on-site observations for four Saudi early childhood teachers in two Montessori classrooms in Saudi Arabia. The data were thematically analyzed manually and with NVivo software. The study results showed that the teachers encouraged children’s independence and freedom of choice in work time and during the classroom day, but limited their freedom during mini-lessons and circle times to meet religious or cultural expectations. The results also highlighted that the flexibility of the school culture and the Montessori method encouraged the teachers to cooperate in designing lessons and activities for the Saudi Montessori classroom context. The study found that the teachers integrated the Islamic and Saudi socio-cultural practices most in circle time, classroom activities, and the daily classroom routine to teach academic, social, and behavioral practices. The results also highlighted that the Montessori system and school rules encouraged organizing the classroom environment. The socio-cultural theory illuminated how the teachers’ adaptations of Montessori principles and Islamic and Saudi socio-cultural practices were affected by their background, beliefs, and experiences. Implications of the study were discussed and recommendations given for early childhood teachers, the Saudi Ministry of Education, and higher education programs. Further research could focus on comparative analysis between teachers implementing Montessori in Saudi Arabia and in a Western country to highlight the cultural influences on adapting the Montessori approach. Prekindergarten Teachers' Perspectives on Classroom Environments and Barriers to Optimal Learning Spaces

Available from: Springer Link

Publication: Early Childhood Education Journal

Abstract/Notes: Physical classroom environments for young children and the quality of those environments have typically been studied by utilizing various rating scales. Research is limited on early childhood educators’ perspectives and decision-making processes in striving to create optimal physical classroom environments during the school year. This qualitative study used the theoretical lens of Bronfenbrenner’s microsystem to examine 22 prekindergarten lead teachers’ decision-making processes regarding initial set up of physical classroom environments, their ability to modify and update their classroom during the school year, and the barriers they face in providing optimal learning environments. Findings indicated that prekindergarten teachers dedicate most of their time, attention, and resources to physical classroom environments at the start of the school year. Great variations were found in the amount of autonomy the teachers had in set-up and materials selection. Updating and modifying those physical classroom environments also varied greatly depending on school setting and teacher experience. The main barriers revolved around budgets, physical space, and time. Implications for child care quality are discussed.
