Abstract/Notes: This dissertation describes an inquiry into Montessori-based white teachers' practices of disrupting white identity formation in the classroom through their antiracist stance. The findings within ultimately demonstrate the necessity for white teachers to grow in their understanding and practice of antiracism. Such growth is meaningful because of the role schools play in systematic white supremacy and racism. Together, the evidence and analysis add to the conversation of antiracist work and produce suggestions for deepening and expanding the potential for such growth in white teachers. In this qualitative study, evidence was collected through focus groups and phenomenological interviews with self-described antiracist white teachers who worked in schools with a student population with white students as the majority subgroup, with other subgroups providing less than 20% of the population. Using qualitative inquiry, the data provide insight into how teachers intentionally create their classroom design and how they make changes countering the hegemony through which traditional educational environments are constructed. Participant perspectives are at the heart of this study. Participants shared their hope to apply a Montessori tenet of providing experiences for the child on the subconscious and the conscious level. The teachers expressed how they have examined themselves and examined their Montessori training to uncover ways they can make changes toward being less Anglo-European centered. The data collected and conversations shared are relatable even to teachers outside of Montessori and demonstrate to white teachers with a desire to be committed to antiracism they are not alone and there are ways to make even subtle changes in their classrooms impacting the children they guide.

Abstract/Notes: Preschool teachers use language to instruct children in classrooms around the globe. The present article contributes to the literature on directives used by preschool teachers in the classroom by presenting an eight-month ethnography of a preschool class. The study investigated the directives used by preschool teachers and students and the multimodal resources that were used, including verbal directives, songs, gestures, forms of eye contact, visual cues, and material objects. The study also analyzed ways in which preschool children were socialized to speak and act in culturally appropriate ways through directives. Analyses of observations and interviews show that directives were a major feature of the multidirectional language socialization of children in the classroom. Teachers and students used a variety of multimodal resources, including their verbal discourse, intonation, gestures, and objects to use discourses in the classroom to socialize children into appropriate modes of interaction in the classroom.

Abstract/Notes: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan metode montessori terhadap kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa kelas I SD Negeri 51 Toli-Toli Kabupaten Pangkep. [This research aims to determine the effect of using the Montessori method on the beginning reading abilities of class I students at SD Negeri 51 Toli-Toli, Pangkep Regency. This type of research is experimental research (Pre-experimental design). The approach used in this research is a quantitative approach with a Onegroup Pretest-Posttest Design research design. Research procedures include preparation, implementation and completion stages. Data collection techniques include tests and observations. The data analysis technique is in the form of descriptive statistical analysis and inferential t-test (t-test). The sample in this study was 28 class I students of SD Negeri 51 Toli-Toli, Pangkep Regency, consisting of 12 men and 16 women. The results of the study showed that the use of the Montessori method had an effect on the beginning reading ability of class I students at SD Negeri 51 Toli-Toli, Pangkep Regency. This is proven by the results of descriptive statistical analysis which shows that student learning outcomes using the Montessori method have changed for the better than before the implementation of the Montessori method. The results of inferential statistical analysis using the t test formula (t-test), it is known that the calculated t value obtained is 26.77 with a frequency of db = 28 - 1 = 27, at a significance level of 0.05 (5%) obtained t 0.05 = 2.05183. So, t Count > t Table or Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (H1) is accepted. This proves that there is an influence in using the Montessori method on the beginning reading abilities of grade 1 students at SD Negeri 51 Toli-Toli, Pangkep Regency.]
