The Extent That Montessori Programs Contribute to Students' Academic and Social Gains and How Montessori Programs Differ from Traditional Programs

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this paper, through a review of current research, is to compare and contrast the Montessori Method and traditional programs and to identify the extent of the social and academic benefit from each. Researchers have found that there are some academic advantages to both programs. However, the academic gains that a child makes in traditional prekindergarten programs appear to diminish as the child gets older. Socially, children who have attended Montessori programs appear to enjoy school and have better relationships with peers and teachers than those in traditional program. An important thing to note is much of this research is inconclusive because of sampling bias due to study design. It is my recommendation that some of the aspects of Montessori education be incorporated into the traditional programs and that this continue as a supplement to the regular school day. Perhaps if students continue to be provided with additional support as they are in prekindergarten, the academic gains experienced as a result could be longer lasting.

[The interdisciplinary relationships in pedagogy are explained through genetic epistemology, analyzing a specific theoretical formulation, in this case, the montessori pedagogy. Through the operationalization of genetic epistemology, it is verified whether it is capable of capturing interdisciplinary relationships within a specific pedagogical formulation and whether this can be considered interdisciplinary. The research developed brings a contribution to pedagogy as it operationalizes a model for the analysis of interdisciplinary relationships within pedagogy. The study concluded that the psychogenetic model made it possible to capture interdisciplinary relationships within theoretical formulations as well as a genuine analysis of Montessori pedagogy, demonstrating its potential in terms of the integral formation of man.]

The Rebirth of Montessori: Rebuilding a Public Charter Montessori School in Post-Katrina New Orleans

Abstract/Notes: "Pre-Katrina" and "Post-Katrina" are common terms for time frames these days in New Orleans, often reminding me of the BCE/CE timeline distinctions. You hear "Pre-Katrina" and "Post-Katrina" on the news, in the paper, and in everyday conversations. Although more and more people have moved back to New Orleans, businesses and restaurants are open, the St. Charles streetcar is running again, and normal life is continuing, Hurricane Katrina is still an everyday topic of conversation. In the midst of the constant reminders of the storm, Montessori education proved to be a stabilizing force in our school community. This is the story of how one public Montessori survived and redefined itself after Hurricane Katrina. (Contains 1 footnote.)
