Abstract/Notes: Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia education remain three of the most popular models for alternative early childhood education. Each of these approaches has developed globally, with a rich history of supporting children’s educational freedom. This narrative analysis provides a means for early childhood educators and scholars to understand the aims, philosophical and theoretical frameworks, historical development, benefits, and challenges in these models and their methods of practice. As early childhood education evolves with technology and as re-conceptualizations about early education occur, an understanding of these alternatives to traditional education models is important. While adaptive options of these models may emerge in education systems across national contexts, this review allows educators to consider their applications and cultural appropriateness in specific local and community contexts.

Abstract/Notes: This paper examines the thinking of Maria Montessori in relation to the contribution of other branches of educational science to the epistemological status of pedagogy. Specifically, it situates the interconnections between Montessori’s approach and medicine (primarily auxology and child neuropsychiatry) understood as a Naturwissenschaften, as well as the practical implications of this interrelatedness, within a heuristic framework that extends beyond the field of special education. Analysis of Montessori’s scientific output around the turn of the twentieth century is followed by a proposed outline of its present-day relevance, in terms of promising avenues of inquiry informed by Montessori’s initial ideas and educational work and recent neuropsychological research.

Abstract/Notes: More than 11 countries in the Middle East region offer early childhood programs that have adopted Montessori and Montessori-inspired practices. Through a case study of Saudi Arabia, this chapter explores Montessori as an imported pedagogy brought to Saudi Arabia by expatriate residents in the 1960s and the culturally specific adaptations made for an Islamic educational environment as Montessori has expanded across private early childhood programs in Saudi Arabia since the 1990s. There is considerable variability in Montessori implementation in Saudi Arabian schools, especially given the international cachet of the Montessori method, suggesting challenges to maintaining fidelity and quality as Montessori-inspired kindergarten programs grow in number.

Abstract/Notes: Educational researchers are increasingly focused on evidence-based and holistic classroom assessment practices that encompass the teacher’s understanding of clear purposes and targets for assessment, as well as appropriate methodologies to yield accurate results and improve outcomes for all children. Montessori educators’ child-centered approach to observing and documenting children’s learning are aligned with formative-assessment practices like portfolios, which are assessments that take place throughout the learning process and which researchers are showing yield strong benefits for student learning. In addition, Montessori learning materials contain elements of embedded assessment designed to give evaluative feedback directly to the student as a natural part of the learning process. This chapter provides an overview of Montessori classroom assessment, discusses observation as the integral assessment strategy in Montessori education, assessment embedded in Montessori materials, and outlines current directions in Montessori assessment.
