Abstract/Notes: This study examined the impact of Montessori training provided to Assistants in authentic Montessori schools that are operating as licensed childcare centers. The study looked at correlations between the implementation of a Montessori specific training program for Assistants and how that impacted the active engagement of the children throughout the morning work cycle. The Lead Teacher in the participating classroom was asked to take a time sampling of the students' engagement levels every 30 minutes during the morning work cycle for a 2 week period of time. This quantitative analysis was completed to determine how many children were wandering, actively engaged, disengaged or actively disengaged in their work. After the data collection period ended, Assistants were given training that focused on the Montessori method and philosophy, classroom management, and feedback/expectations in their role. Post-training, the goal was to conduct another 2 week round of time sampling to analyze if the engagement level of the children increased. However, during the training period, turnover at the participating school increased from 3% to 33%, leaving the researcher unable to fully complete the training before conducting another round of time sampling. Interviews during and after this period of time indicated that the reason for the turnover was due to an inauthentic Montessori classroom feel (55% of respondents) and/or personal reasons (45% of respondents.) With further research, the root causes of the "inauthentic classroom feel" were narrowed down to difficult child behaviors, transitions of children moving from the toddler room to the children's house room, and, overwhelmingly, a lack of Assistant training. While the original research project was unable to be completed due to the staff turnover, the root cause of the turnover pointed to the necessity of implementing an Assistant Training program in the future. Not only would this potentially decrease Teacher and Assistant turnover in the Montessori classroom, but better retention and more highly trained staff would most certainly have a positive impact on child engagement in the classroom.

Abstract/Notes: İtalyan eğitim felsefesi uzmanı Maria Montessori 1970 yılında İtalya Ancora’da dünyaya gelmiştir. [Italian pedagogue Maria Montessori was born in 1970 in Ancona, Italy. The Montessori education system, which has been used for over a century, was developed by Maria Montessori. With this education system, where there is no restriction, a free education is offered to children. Today, trainers are trained by the International Montessori Association in England in order to provide Montessori education. This education goes up to kindergarten, primary school and in some countries high school level. Maria Montessori determined what the children liked and disliked in her observations while working with non-disabled children in the first children's home “Casa dei Bambini” in 1907. Maria Montessori observed that children: they do not like rewards, punishments, toys, teacher's desk, group lessons, they like free choice, control over their mistakes, silence, establishing social relations by themselves, reading and writing without books. In Montessori education, where children see themselves as individuals, family, teacher and student are in cooperation. Education is given in line with the student's learning pace and knowledge is learned by groping, not by mind. It is ensured that abstract concepts are understood with concrete concepts. Montessori education primarily focuses on the formation of personality. Maria Montessori expresses this clearly as follows: “In education, not the method, but the human personality is taken into consideration.”]

The Extent That Montessori Programs Contribute to Students' Academic and Social Gains and How Montessori Programs Differ from Traditional Programs

Available from: Google Scholar

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this paper, through a review of current research, is to compare and contrast the Montessori Method and traditional programs and to identify the extent of the social and academic benefit from each. Researchers have found that there are some academic advantages to both programs. However, the academic gains that a child makes in traditional prekindergarten programs appear to diminish as the child gets older. Socially, children who have attended Montessori programs appear to enjoy school and have better relationships with peers and teachers than those in traditional program. An important thing to note is much of this research is inconclusive because of sampling bias due to study design. It is my recommendation that some of the aspects of Montessori education be incorporated into the traditional programs and that this continue as a supplement to the regular school day. Perhaps if students continue to be provided with additional support as they are in prekindergarten, the academic gains experienced as a result could be longer lasting.

Abstract/Notes: Froebel and Montessori are compared in their approaches for teaching preschool children the concept of number, numerical calculation, vulgar fraction and geometrical concepts. Froebel's approach is largely metaphysical whereas Montessori's is largely sensorial. But their approaches are not diametrically opposed to each other but rather cmoplementary to each other from the educational view point. Their different claims or views should be closely studied and objectively evaluated through various experiments, before any of them are seriously incorporated in our educational practices.

Abstract/Notes: Bu araştırmada, Montessori Yönteminin anaokulu çocuklarının ilköğretime hazır bulunuşluklarına etkisi incelenmiştir. / This research was studied with the purpose of analyzing the effect of Montessori method supported by social skills training program on kindergarten children's skills of understanding feelings and social problem solving. 53 children who attended at Selcuk University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ihsan Dogramaci Aplication Nursery School in Konya in 2013-2014 school year were included in the study group. Wally Feelings Test and Wally Social Problem Solving Test were used as data collection tool. The tests were applied to the children as pre and post test; in addition, the tests were applied to the experimental group again six weeks after the end of the educational program. Kruskal Wallis H test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test were used to analysis of data obtained in the study. When findings were analyzed, comparing scores of posttest of Wally Feelings Test and Wally Social Problem Solving Test of experimental, control 1 and control 2 groups, it was found that there was a meaningful differentiation in favor of experimental group. When comparing posttest and follow-up test of Wally Feelings Test and Wally Social Problem Solving Test scores of experimental group, it was proved that there was not a meaningful differentiation. The overall outcome of the study based on the obtained results is that Montessori Method Supported by Social Skills Training Program supports the development of children's skills of understanding feelings and social problem solving.
