Abstract/Notes: Reviews Maria Montessori's view of sensitive periods and examines the kinds of help needed from adults: an open mind, specific help from a prepared learning environment, and challenges presented at the right time. Stresses the universality of sensitive periods and their connection to brain development. Focuses on the unconscious nature and transitory status of sensitive periods, distinguishing first-plane sensitive periods and the sensitive points for subsequent planes. (Author/KB)

Cosmology and children: A phenomenological study of the Timeline of Light
See More
Abstract/Notes: This study asks: What is it like for Montessori children, ages 11-12, to experience a current and integral approach to cosmology via the author's original Timeline of Light Curriculum? Based on the cosmological principles detailed in Swimme and Berry's The Universe Story (Swimme &Berry, 1992) the 08 December 2012 Page 5 of 14 ProQuest curriculum is integral and multidisciplinary: art, music, movement, experiment, mathematics, geometry, prose, and poetry are all employed. The children's work is used as the phenomenological data for a subsequent hermeneutic (thematic interpretation). Three themes emerge from the work: the affective ground, the creation of a metaphoric Cosmos, and identity. The affective ground is described as the ground of feeling that sets the tone for both subsequent feelings and the creation of the metaphoric cosmos. The metaphoric cosmos is the creative interpretation of both each individual child and the group. That creation is fostered by the exercises presented in the lessons. This thematic relies heavily on the expanded definitions of metaphor as defined by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), and Samples' (1993). The study also describes an emergent theme of expanded personal identity resultant from the metaphoric ways the children described their experiences throughout their studies.

The Origin and Development of Democracy in Education in Time Perspective
See More
Abstract/Notes: In this study the origin and development of democracy in education through the ages is traced in terms of a historico-educational examination of the ideas and practices of about ten educationists. The new outcomesbased education and learning approach is also examined. The educationists are inter alia: (1) Plato (427-347 BC); (2) Marcus Fabius Quintilian (35-100 AD); (3) Aurelius Augustine (354-430 AD); (4) Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536 AD); (5) John Amos Comenius (1592-1670); (6) John Locke (1632-1704); (7) Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778); (8) Maria Montessori (1870-1952); (9) John Dewey (1859-1952); (10) Paulo Freire (1912- ). It was found that democracy in educational theory and practice was addressed, established and developed since ancient times (the ancient Greeks) right up to the present. Finally, the educational philosophy and practices of these educationists as well the outcomes-based educational approach in South Africa are examined in terms of their essential democratic features and recommendations are made regarding the present education system in South Africa.
