Abstract/Notes: This phenomenological case study was conducted to better understand the experience of a Montessori teacher in a leadership role. A veteran Montessori teacher, newly hired by an established Montessori preschool, was interviewed over the course of her first year in the position. A critical discourse analysis revealed multiple social identities that contributed to her desire, and ability, to be what she felt was an authentic Montessori educator. While some of these discourses and social identities aligned, some did not, creating ideational dilemmas that affected her work, relationships, and personal identity. The findings suggest that current Montessori discourse excludes important characteristics of the teacher-lived experience. Acknowledging and discussing the social challenges Montessori teachers face is a necessary addition to teacher preparation, teacher support systems, and Montessori leadership decisions.

Abstract/Notes: The article focuses on the first part of the atypical path of Helene Lubienska de Lenval (1895-1972), an educationalist without formal qualifications: from her early collaboration and breake with Maria Montessori, to a personal interpretation and integration of the Montessori method, which she would later pass on to thousands of French teachers through her many different contributions. The A. goes beyond the apparent simplicity of Lubienska’s practice by analyzing the wealth of her contributions – which were inspired, among other things, by the Christian liturgy. The article explores the reasons for the lack of recognition during her life, despite her dense and diversified literary output and her novel pedagogical approach.

Abstract/Notes: Albert Bandura, the leading pioneer in the study of self-regulation, has defined the term as the child's ability to self-educate, self-direct, regulate motivation, and learn to think about what she is learning (1994). Lev Vygotsky's theory that children can be taught to think independently about how to solve problems expands upon Bandura's work (1978). Though Montessori did not use the term "self-regulation," the descriptions of inner discipline, or "normalization," in her writings are clearly related to this concept. Because Montessori classrooms emphasize developing behaviors associated with self-regulation, Lander University's Montessori Teacher Education Program chose to focus on this as a topic of research in a 3-year study funded by a 2004 congressionally directed grant. Findings showed positive results for Montessori children in ratings of self-regulation and academic performance which affirm the effectiveness of Montessori classroom practice in fostering positive work habits and internal motivation. The authors hope that these results will lead more public school administrators, particularly those in small rural settings where programs of school choice are rare, to consider Montessori a viable option.
