Abstract/Notes: The goal of this thesis was to support small children`s participation at a daycare center. The aim was to enable the children to become active by listening to their own ideas and letting them influence the planned action as much as possible. The cooperation partner of this thesis was a Montessori Playschool in Helsinki. The method chosen to support participation was drama activity in a small group. All in all the output of this project comprised drama activities and ready-made drama fairytales that I wrote to help the educators of the playschool to continue using drama in the future. The theoretical base of this thesis was the theory of social participation and the theory of drama education. In the evaluation process of the project I compared a model describing the participation process and levels among children to drama to clarify the process during the drama sessions and to measure the level of participation. I used the same model when planning the drama sessions. The evaluation process was ongoing throughout the drama process to make sure the planned activity would enable the participation of the children as well as possible. The drama process included five drama sessions organized for the six smallest children of the playschool. A fairy tale was used as a frame for the drama sessions, and the theme of the action, environmental education and recycling were based on the fairy tale and the interests of working life. The drama activities filled the requirements of supporting participation among children. They were able to influence the action at many levels and to bring out their own ideas during it. This and the key point of drama, which is equality between the adult and the children, enabled true participation among children. Drama-action can be used as an enriching method in Montessori activities but also in different situations in daycare in general such as working with children with special needs or in a process of building trust in a new group. / Opinnäytetyöni tavoitteena oli pienten lasten osallisuuden tukeminen päiväkodin arjessa. Opinnäytetyön tiimoilta pyrittiin mahdollistamaan lasten kuulluksi tuleminen ja tila heidän omien ajatustensa ja ideoidensa esille tuomiseksi. Opinnäytetyöni yhteistyökumppanina toimi Helsingissä sijaitseva Montessori- leikkikoulu. Toiminnallisen, projektiluontoisen opinnäytetyöni menetelmiksi osallisuuden tukemiseen valikoituivat pienryhmä- sekä draamatoiminta. Toiminnallisen projektin tuotoksina toimivat lapsille pitämäni draamamenetelmään pohjautuvat tuokiot sekä Montessori- leikkikoulun työntekijöille menetelmän jatkokäytön tueksi laatimani kehyskertomukset. Toiminnallisen opinnäytetyön teoriapohjana toimivat osallisuuden teoria sekä teoria draamakasvatuksesta. Toiminnallisen osuuden arvioinnissa peilasin tuokioiden toimintaa Leena Turjan osallisuuden moniulotteisuuden – malliin. Kyseistä mallia hyödynsin myös opinnäytetyön toiminnallisen osuuden suunnittelussa. Toimintaa arvioitiin jatkuvasti prosessin kaikissa vaiheissa, jotta toiminta vastaisi parhaalla mahdollisella tavalla pienten lasten osallisuuden tukemisen haasteeseen Montessori- leikkikoulussa.

Abstract/Notes: Women play a prominent role in bringing about peace in post-conflict societies. Several studies have found the systematic and representative inclusion of women in conflict resolution processes to significantly increase the chances of sustainable peace. However, women’s contribution to peace processes are often underemphasized or ignored in conflict management research and praxis. It was not until the passage of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and seven other related resolutions that critical attention was given to women’s role in the peace process. This article provides an in-depth review of the literature on women’s contribution to conflict resolution and peacebuilding. The overall aim is to provide researchers and actors in the global peace market with a distillation of the salient studies and findings from research on women’s involvement in the peace process. Such an effort is necessary to bring together the sparse literature on women’s contribution to peace and to reveal existing gaps in the literature for future research.

Abstract/Notes: Using data from the 2015–16 round of the Private School Universe Survey, I examine the types of private schools that decide to participate in school voucher programs in seven locations: Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Louisiana, D.C., and North Carolina. Regression analysis indicates that more specialized private schools tend to be less likely to participate in voucher programs than regular private schools. Specifically, the preferred model finds that private schools that identify as Montessori, special education, and alternative are less likely to participate in voucher programs than schools that identify as regular. In addition, schools that are non-coeducational and schools that focus on serving homeschool students are less likely to participate in voucher programs. I also find that random admissions mandates and state testing requirements are negatively associated with private school participation in voucher programs, while the prohibition of copayment is positively associated with program participation.

Abstract/Notes: This action research project was conducted to see if participation in an online leadership cohort would affect the self-efficacy of school leaders. Using an online platform, seven Montessori heads of schools from the United States gathered to discuss topics of greatest importance to them. The schools represented were public, private, non-profit, proprietary and charter. The heads of schools ranged in experience from 3 to 33 years. They met once a week, for four weeks, for an hour each session to discuss four topics most relevant to the group, as determined by their suggestions. Data was collected using pre and post intervention self-assessments and surveys, as well as field notes, observation records, and tally sheets taken during the four leadership cohort sessions. The researcher facilitated the group and guided the conversations with prompts and continued questions. The heads of school asked questions of each other, offered answers, and shared resources. The intervention was shown to increase the self-efficacy of some participants, decrease the self-efficacy of some participants, and not affect the self-efficacy of others. However, the participants all reported feelings of gratitude for the opportunity to come together, citing community and collaboration as the most positive rewards.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study is to determine whether teachers' attitudes towards family participation in preschool education institutions that adopt the approaches related to Montessori, Reggio Emilia and MEB education programs differ. In addition, teachers' level of education, age, type of institution, professional qualifications and professional experiences are also considered as variables. In addition, the opinions of pre-school teachers about family participation were examined comparatively. The sample of the study consists of 81 preschool teachers working in the educational institutions that adopt the approaches related to Montessori, Reggio Emilia and MEB education programs in Kadıköy, Maltepe and Ataşehir districts of Istanbul province in the 2018-2019 Academic Year. The Attitude Scale on Family Participation Studies for Teachers and the Personal Information Form containing open-ended questions for family participation were simultaneously filled in order to reveal the similarities and differences in family participation studies. According to the results of the study; the attitude points of the teachers who work in preschool education institutions which adopt the approaches related to Montessori, Reggio Emilia and MEB programs have shown a significant difference. In this context, it was determined that the scores obtained from the attitude scale differed according to the approaches. The attitude scores of the teachers working in preschool education institutions, which adopted the Reggio Emilia approach, was higher than the attitude scores of the teachers working in preschool education institutions that adopted the Montessori and MEB educational approaches. In addition, the attitudes of pre-school teachers towards family participation showed statistically significant differences according to age and category of the institution they served. However, it was determined that the attitudes of pre-school teachers towards family participation did not show a statistically significant difference between the professional title and professional experience categories. At the same time, it was concluded that preschool teachers' views on family participation reflect the educational approaches adopted by preschools.
