[This text presents a plot about the circulation of Maria Montessori from sources located in Italy, the result of a sandwich stage whose objective was to establish narrative threads that could contribute to better understanding aspects that are related to the circulation of Montessori and its context of knowledge production for training and teaching in the first decades of the 20th century. It is possible to say, after analysis, that the systematization of Montessori's proposal in written form contributed to the dissemination of his method, given the boom after the publication of Scientific Pedagogy and the publication of articles in journals organized by it. It is also worth mentioning that teacher training courses have also gained an important role in the circulation of their method, given the calls to Montessori made by the State, which can be considered as recognition of an expertise to respond to a practical demand at the time.]

American Writings on Maria Montessori: An Inquiry into Changes in the Reception and Interpretations Given to Writings on Maria Montessori and Montessori Educational Ideas 1910-1915 and 1958-1970

Available from: ProQuest Dissertations and Theses

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this dissertation will be to survey and analyze American writings on Maria Montessori and her educational system, in order to show how the idea of Montessori education has interacted with some changing American ideas and social forces. These changes in social and intellectual currents can be likened to a shift from centrifugal to centripetal force; or to the expansion and then the contraction of a universe. The central metaphor is the same. It is applicable to, and illustrative of, much about the changing social and educational scene in America. The writings on Montessori, examined against this framework, should provide a new view on certain changes in American educational thinking.

Abstract/Notes: Little is currently known about how teachers in New Zealand Montessori early childhood centres reflect on Montessori philosophy and practice individually and collaboratively within teaching teams. The purpose of this research was to discover the current views about reflection on Montessori philosophy, the barriers teachers faced in reflecting and opportunities they identified for reflection. The impact that requirements for self review and teacher reflection have had on the approach taken to reflection, inquiry and professional learning by teachers in Montessori early childhood centres was also investigated. This research study used a mixed method case study and data was collected from teachers working in Montessori early childhood centres through semistructured interviews with three groups and an online survey of individual teachers. Participants placed high importance on reflection. However some participants were reluctant to critique Montessori philosophy; either because they viewed it as ‘valid’ or because they were concerned about being regarded as ‘heretical’ by other teachers. Participants felt safe raising questions within their teaching teams, but were more wary of debating and questioning philosophical issues with teachers in the wider Montessori community. Others regarded reflection as an opportunity to develop a shared understanding of Montessori philosophy and practice in their early childhood centre. Despite the participants’ perception that their team spent time reflecting on Montessori philosophy and relating this to daily teaching practice, it was still a challenge to make these reflective activities a priority in limited centre team meeting times. In addition, it appears that more support is needed to improve skills and knowledge about how the cyclical process of review or inquiry can engage with Montessori philosophy, inform centre philosophy, drive centre practice and improve outcomes for children. This study suggests that teachers would benefit from the creation of ‘safe spaces’ where they can engage with colleagues from their own or other Montessori early childhood centres in debate and discussion so that teaching practice becomes based on critical engagement with the underlying theoretical or philosophical principles of Montessori education.

Abstract/Notes: The foundation of the pedagogy elaborated by Maria Montessori is the development of children's personality based on their interest, activity, individual characteristics and developmental rhythm. Its main compo-nents are: the child with his/her freedom of action, motion and choice, the educator as the child's helpmate, and the consciously designed and furnished environment. Montessori's pedagogical concept is all-com-prehensive and global, that is why it can be applied in the most varied cultures and religions. She promoted the individual thinking and deci-sion making of the educators in order to implement her accepted prin-ciples in their own pedagogy and not just expect the method to have its innovative effect. All her life she fought against the interpretation of her theory as being simply an educational method. The article presents the life of Maria Montessori, her pedagogy and her concept on religion and religious education. In the study the author examines some of Maria Montessori's universal and religious pedagogical principles (individual action, activity, the principle of freedom, the psychological principle, the social principle, moral education etc.).
