Abstract/Notes: The Italian educator and physician Maria Montessori (1870–1952) is best known for the teaching method that bears her name. She was also a lifelong pacifist, although historians tend to consider her writings on this topic as secondary to her pedagogy. In The Best Weapon for Peace, Erica Moretti reframes Montessori’s pacifism as the foundation for her educational activism, emphasizing her vision of the classroom as a gateway to reshaping society. Montessori education offers a child-centered learning environment that cultivates students’ development as peaceful, curious, and resilient adults opposed to war and invested in societal reform. Using newly discovered primary sources, Moretti examines Montessori’s lifelong pacifist work, including her ultimately unsuccessful push for the creation of the White Cross, a humanitarian organization for war-affected children. Moretti shows that Montessori’s educational theories and practices would come to define chilren’s rights once adopted by influential international organizations, including the United Nations. She uncovers the significance of Montessori’s evolving philosophy of peace and early childhood education within broader conversations about internationalism and humanitarianism.

Abstract/Notes: Montessori's acceptance into medical school was a personal achievement and would have ramifications for the lives of a multitude of future generations. In March 1896, she was invited to the first Women's International Congress, in Berlin, where she spoke of the need for equal pay for equal work for women. Montessori's vision for social change has filtered into early childhood classrooms, and public Montessori schools have entered the mainstream, touching the lives of millions of children.

Abstract/Notes: With the current immigration and migration trends in Europe and worldwide, English as an Additional Language (EAL) education is becoming a prominent area of educational research. The discourse around EAL and social justice education has, until now, largely focused on primary, secondary, and post compulsory aged students. Preschool aged EAL children have been left out of the academic discourse. Pedagogical approaches need to be explored to marry EAL and social justice for preschool children. Maria Montessori’s pedagogical approach may be able to achieve this unity without compromising the language development that is desired. The following study is a piece of action research, applying the Montessori Method to a group of nine EAL children in the Canton of Zürich, Switzerland. The data gathered suggests that applying Montessori’s approach to EAL education, that of listening to the child and being attentive to hisher needs, gives autonomy to the student, and can promote social justice in preschool EAL education. Listening to the child occurs through ‘observation’ (attentiveness to the child), critical reflection of practice, and experimentation in education. In this way each child receives a customized education that has, at its foundation, respect for the child. Using ‘observation,’ field notes, and researcher reflections, it became apparent that young children are able to communicate their educational needs. TESOL outcomes were used to monitor the rate at which English was learned. Each language journey was vastly different, but regardless of the initial outcomes met, all children demonstrated increases in their comprehension and spoken English. Abstract/Notes: The purposes of this study are to determine the views of teachers about Montessori science education, to discuss the Montessori approach in detail and make suggestions in this regard. The study was designed as a case study which is a qualitative research method. The participants were selected based on the criterion sampling method that is a purposive sampling method. In this regard, 7 upper elementary teachers and 8 middle school science teachers who are trained in Montessori teacher education programs participate in the study. Data is collected through a semi-structured interview. The collected data is analyzed with content analysis and descriptive analysis techniques from qualitative data analysis techniques. Findings suggest that the Montessori approach encourages children to work freely throughout the entire education but expects them to be responsible for their education. To achieve this, the learning environment, the teaching methods and techniques, and the assessment and evaluation methods take a highly flexible structure. This flexible structure of the approach allows individualization for each child. From the teachers' point of view, it is understood that the Montessori approach focuses on providing a nurturing environment where each child is respected and encouraged, where social interaction is intense, rather than focusing on academic education. In light of these findings, some suggestions for the implementation of the approach are presented. / Bu araştırmanın amacı, Montessori fen eğitimine ilişkin öğretmenlerin görüşlerini belirlemek, bu görüşler doğrultusunda Montessori yaklaşımını detaylı bir şekilde ele almak ve bu konuda önerilerde bulunmaktır. Çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması olarak desenlenmiştir. Katılımcılar, amaçlı örnekleme türlerinden ölçüt örnekleme göre belirlenmiştir. Bu doğrultuda araştırmaya uluslararası Montessori eğitmen eğitimi programlarına katılmış 7 ilkokul ikinci kademe (4,5 ve 6.sınıf) sınıf öğretmeni ve 8 ortaokul (7 ve 8.sınıf) fen bilgisi öğretmeni dâhil edilmiştir. Veriler yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formuyla toplanmıştır. Toplanan verilerin analizinde nitel veri analiz tekniklerinden içerik analizi ve betimsel analiz kullanılmıştır. Bulgular Montessori yaklaşımının; çocukların tüm eğitim öğretim sürecinde özgür çalışmalarını teşvik eden fakat onlardan kendi eğitimlerinden sorumlu olmalarını bekleyen, bunu sağlayabilmek için öğrenme ortamını, öğretim yöntem ve tekniklerini ve ölçme ve değerlendirme yöntemlerini son derece esnek bir yapıya büründüren bir yaklaşım olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Yaklaşımın bu esnek yapısı her çocuk için bireyselleştirilmesine imkân tanımaktadır. Öğretmenlerin görüşlerinden Montessori yaklaşımının akademik eğitime odaklanmak yerine her çocuğun bireysel farklılıklara saygı duyulan ve teşvik edilen, sosyal etkileşimin yoğun olduğu besleyici bir ortam sağlamaya odaklandığı anlaşılmaktadır. Bu bulgular ışığında yaklaşımın uygulanabilmesine dair bazı öneriler sunulmuştur.
