A Natural History of Preschool Children's Behaviour

Available from: University of Lethbridge - Institutional Repository

Abstract/Notes: Naturalistic observations in a free play day care were conducted to study motor and object manipulation behaviour in preschool-aged children. Behaviour settings theory, which predicts that setting has greater influence over behaviour than individual factors, was tested by comparing behaviour between indoor and outdoor settings. Analysis confirmed that there were motor and object manipulation rate differences across settings. Consequently, setting was controlled for in the second analysis, which looked at repetitive behaviour. Repetition is a central concept to Montessori educational theory and is used as a learning tool in Montessori classrooms; however, little information about repetition as a developmentally typical behaviour is available. A natural history of repetition was recorded to determine: activities during which repetition takes place; commonality of repetition across children; age that children most frequently engage in repetition; and length of repetitive bouts. Analysis revealed similarities and differences between Montessori's account of repetition and observed behaviour.

Abstract/Notes: This bachelor thesis Motivation of parents to choose Montessori preschool education is divided in two parts-theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part I described what is Montessori, who was Maria Montessori, how does Montessori look like now, what are the main principles of this education, how important is a role of a teacher and prepared environment and the end of this chapter was about a relationship between parents and education. The practical part was based on a questionnaire survey that was send among parents who have their children in Montessori kindergarten. The results show that parents choose Montessori especially because they sympathize with Montessori philosophy and it´s principles. For parents the most important were individual approach of teachers to children, kids learning responsibility and mutual respect.

Abstract/Notes: Cíl: V rámci bakalářské práce bylo provedeno měření jemné motoriky u dětí předškolního věku pravidelně navštěvujících Montessori mateřskou školu. Nejdříve proběhlo porovnání výsledků dětí z Montessori MŠ s hodnotami pražských dětí a poté komparace výsledků zjištěných v Montessori MŠ a hodnot dětí uvedených v diplomové práci Mgr. Ludvíka Valtra. Výsledky a diskuze: V rámci obou porovnání byl patrný statisticky významný rozdíl pouze v motorické dovednosti číslo 1, kdy u prvního zmíněného vzorku vykazovaly ukazatele úrovně jemné motoriky lepší hodnoty u souboru dětí z běžné MŠ a u druhého byla naopak patrná dovednostní převaha dětí z Montessori MŠ. Z výsledků tedy jednoznačně nevyplývá potvrzení ani vyvrácení hypotézy, která předpokládala dosažení jasně lepších výsledků dětmi z Montessori MŠ. / The Aim of the Thesis: We will measure fine motor skills of children in preschool age visiting Montessori kindergarten. We will compare measured results with children who visit common kindergartens. Method: We used battery test MABC-2 for measuring. We also used data from measuring fine motor skills among children from selection of kindergartens in Prague. This research is done by Mgr. Jakub Kokštejn, Ph.D. and has not been publishet yet. We also used data presented by Mr. Ludvík Valtr. We compared results between children from the Montessori kindergarten and children visiting prague kindergartens- sample one. Then we compared our results with results from the Diploma thesis by Mr. Ludvík Valtr- sample two. Results and Discussion: We found statistically significant result only in measuring of motor skill number one. In first mentioned sample we found better results between children from common kindergartens. In second mentioned sample we found better results between children from the Montessori kindergarten. We can not confirm or disprove the hypothesis where we expected significantly better results between children visiting Montessori kindergarten.

Abstract/Notes: This study aimed to examine the effects of Montessori Education on children’s self-regulation skills in the preschool period. The study had a 2 × 2 mixed design, wherein the dependent variable was self-regulation levels of 3, 4, 5-year-old children (experimental group: 62, control group: 53) and the independent variable was education based on the Montessori Method whose influence on children’s self-regulation skills was examined. The study employed the Demographic Information Form, the Preschool Self-Regulation Assessment (PSRA). The study results yielded a significant difference in posttest mean scores for Self-Regulation and Attention/Impulse Control between experimental and control group children, while there was no significant difference in Positive Emotion. There was a significant difference for Self-Regulation and Attention/Impulse Control between the pretest and posttest mean scores of experimental group children, whereas the analyses indicated no significant difference between pretest and posttest mean scores of control group children for Self-Regulation, Attention/Impulse Control and Positive Emotion. Abstract/Notes: The development of empathy in early childhood contributes to moral development, which affects justice and ultimately, society. This research team contends, corroborated by the most current evidence available in this field of study, that we can build up strong communities by cultivating empathy, emotional literacy, and prosocial behavior in early childhood - the period of life in which the brain is most plastic. These assertions are justified by Montessori philosophy. This paper offers a framework supporting the execution and implementation of a robust, community-based program for social interaction that has potential to benefit infants and preschool-age children in the context of Montessori classroom environments.

Abstract/Notes: The number of preschoolers expelled and suspended from school is the highest among all student groups. In the long run, preschool expulsions and suspensions can have statistically detrimental effects on a child's life trajectory. In addition, students who are expelled or suspended have a higher dropout rate than other students. Researchers suggested that professional development of evidence-based strategies for preschool teachers could effectively address this issue, as challenging behavior is the leading cause of suspension and expulsion for students. However, traditional methods of professional development have not proven to be effective. According to researchers, consistent coaching has been suggested as an effective way to develop professional competence. In this of this study, the effect of virtual coaching on Head Start teachers use of behavior-specific praise is examined. Head Start programs need cost-effective ways for their teachers to learn evidence-based strategies. Providing virtual coaching could alleviate these costs.

Abstract/Notes: The focus of this research is the spiritual experience of young children in early childhood educational settings. Spirituality is included in the New Zealand early childhood curriculum, Te Whariki, but is a relatively unarticulated aspect of educational practice. In order to find out how spirituality is supported in early childhood educational contexts this qualitative case study research took place in three early childhood settings: a Montessori casa, a private preschool and a Steiner (Waldorf) kindergarten. The methods used in the research included participant observation, interviews and focus groups. The teachers were asked to make a video about spirituality to reflect their own context and photographs were taken in each setting. The metaphor of spiritual landscape is used in this research. In this landscape everyday experience merged with the spiritual to form the concept of everyday spirituality. The cultural theories of everyday life supported a realisation that ordinary daily activity can become wonderful and mysterious when the spiritual dimension is realised. The themes that emerged from analysis of the case studies are conceptualised as transformative aspects of learning and relationships. They are aspects of everyday spirituality identified as spiritual withness; spiritual inbetweenness; and the spiritually elsewhere. Representing spiritual experience is challenging. The thesis is written in narrative form and contains core narratives as prose and poems. Using writing as a means of discovery made communicating spirituality through the medium of words a possibility. Spirituality is proposed to be an inclusive concept that affirms a sense of connection and this thesis found that all pedagogical practices in early childhood settings have the potential to include a spiritual aspect. In Aotearoa New Zealand many children lead their everyday lives in the context of an early childhood environment that includes teachers and parents as part of that community. This thesis argues that when everyday spirituality permeates early childhood contexts that all aspects of the curriculum are realised and the spiritual experience of everyone connected to that setting is supported.
