Space and time are often, and from different perspectives, the main educational tools for Early Childhood Education. They are very important for children because they help them to strengthen their level of familiarity with the context of learning, and so are for educators because the organization of space and school time acts as an essential teaching device. This article aims to draw attention to the Montessori method because it represents, in this sense, a useful tool to adapt the spaces and times of educational programming to the rhythms of learning and to cognitive levels of children. The principle of “Help me do it by myself”, which is one of the basis of the Montessori method, has a great value for emancipation as an ideal device for children to learn autonomy. This principle may, therefore, become a useful teaching tool for educators to transform their professional experience and to rethink, in terms of project, their own educational practices.

The purpose of the article is to highlight the role played by certain types of game in Montessori. In particular, it seeks to highlight the lack of understanding of the role of symbolic play in the early years of children’s lives, creating a real paradox in the Montessori system despite her observation of children in school and natural contexts. Montessori has advocated a view to proposing a pedagogy with scientific bases, but she has been unable to integrate the symbolic play in its pedagogical proposal. I also try to outline her substantial correlation with Dewey in the description of a type of intelligent activity that originates from a child’s interest in respect of an environmental stimulus on which he is able to maintain a sustained concentration, however Montessori maintains a deep distance from Dewey in terminology, who calls this activity “game”, while she, instead, “work.” I give an account of the positive role that have the playful activities and the playful attitude (playfulness) in the Montessori method and of the importance of sensorimotor games and rulegames. The analysis shows that Montessori has been able to integrate the playful dimension of human activity in the teaching/learning process through a general recognition of the playful activity, despite misunderstandings and paradoxes about the symbolic play and on the very definition of play.

Abstract/Notes: With the aim of facing up to the deterioration of the environmental condition, the environmental team of Escuela Normal Superior Distrital María Montessori and the Collective Citizen Action convoke the local government institutions and the citizen street inhabitants to have a dialogue of knowledge to find concerted solutions for the current environmental problems. In the same sense, the project Environmental Education and Citizen Participation: Strategies for a policy of sustainable development at ENSDMM works on the proposal of the Environmental Management Institutional Plan. It helps to develop a strategic environmental evaluation and points out that the environmental education and citizen participation are possible if education and management are involved in the processes, activities and actions based on principles of social responsibility ethics to achieve the sustainable environmental goals.

[SUMMARY Herman Hertzberger belongs to a group of architects that understand the architecture-pedagogy binomial as indissoluble. Ever since the beginning of the 20th Century, they have embraced the complementarity of these two disciplines in the educational world, and have revealed the way architecture and pedagogy collaborate through the recreation of a model for society and therefore influence the place where education takes place. In this context, Hertzberger understands architecture as a pedagogical tool as well as an opportunity for the configuration of a space for interaction. Hertzberger´s work confirms a commitment with the child as the centre of the learning process. Moreover, the architect demonstrates major interest in collective values, together with an understanding of architecture as a basis-foundation for freedom. His direct precedents are the ideas of his teacher, Aldo van Eyck. However, it is in his educational architecture where these can be radically observed. The numerous projects that he has designed cover all the phases of the educational process: from those of early childhood to university studies. In these projects he has developed a wide repertoire of design strategies linked to the Active school and the Montessori Method. His extensive work allows him to try out the full scope of the idea of a building being like a city, by blurring the limits between public and private space, the school and its environment, in a journey that crosses from the classroom to the city.]
