Abstract/Notes: Mathematics is a school subject which causes students the greatest problems, sometimes throughout their entire school experience. Unsatisfactory learning outcomes in mathematics have been observed worldwide for a number of years, and the lack of or poor mathematical skills make it impossible for many students to cope with the ever increasing demands of modern life. In view of this alarming situation, constant attempts are being made to modify and reform mathematics education curricula in order to improve their effectiveness. The present study explores the difficulties faced by students in learning mathematics. Attention is given to the types and effects of failures in mathematics education. In the context of these problems, the Montessori method is recommended as an alternative. The main assumptions of the Montessori pedagogy are presented, with a special emphasis on the development material. The greatest prominence is given to sensory and mathematical materials, providing their brief characterization and pointing to their high educational effectiveness. In order to bring the characteristics of Montessori’s organizational forms closer (forms of students’ work) the three-stage-lesson is presented. The lesson involves presenting the names connected with the typical developmental Montessori method with the use of Golden Bead Material. The concluding section highlights the didactic effectiveness of Montessori pedagogy in the domain of mathematics education. It is stressed that students who have been educated in Montessori schools work eagerly with mathematical materials and independently. They achieve educational success, acquire new skills and see that mathematics can be easy and pleasant to learn. / Matematyka jest przedmiotem, który sprawia uczniom najwięcej problemów nieraz przez całe życie szkolne. Od lat obserwuje się na całym świecie niezadawalające wyniki nauczania tego przedmiotu, a brak lub zbyt niski poziom umiejętności matematycznych nie pozwala wielu uczniom sprostać rosnącym wymaganiom życiowym. Taka niepokojąca sytuacja implikuje podejmowanie ustawicznych prób modyfikacji i reformowania programów edukacji matematycznej zmierzających w kierunku większej ich skuteczności. W pracy podjęto problem trudności dzieci w uczeniu się matematyki. Zwrócono uwagę na rodzaje i skutki niepowodzeń w edukacji matematycznej. W kontekście tych zagadnień, jako alternatywę zakomenderowano edukację metodą M. Montessori. Omówiono główne założenia pedagogiki montessoriańskiej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem materiału rozwojowego. Największą uwagę poświęcono materiałom sensorycznym i matematycznym, dokonując krótkiej ich charakterystyki oraz wskazując wysoką skuteczność edukacyjną. W celu przybliżenia specyfiki montessoriańskich form pracy ucznia przedstawiono trzystopniową lekcję nazw dotyczącą charakterystycznej dla metody Montessori pomocy rozwojowej, zwanej „złotym materiałem”. W zakończeniu wskazano efektywność dydaktyczną pedagogiki Montessori w obszarze edukacji matematycznej. Podkreślono, że uczniowie w placówkach montessoriańskich chętnie i samodzielnie pracują z materiałami matematycznymi. Doświadczają sukcesów, nabywają nowe umiejętności i przekonują się, że matematyka może być łatwa i przyjemna.

Abstract/Notes: Nanette Schonleber makes a remarkable correlation as to why Hawaiian indigenous educators thrive with Montessori pedagogy. Compatible educators share values and goals, such as developmental learning, respect for parenthood, freedom of movement and independence, choice in learning, and specific individualized potential. Hawaiian language and culture-based educators view their work as a way of learning embedded in a way of life that integrates a cultural worldview and belief system, such as the child as a spiritual being, earth as living, and creation as interconnected. The author also finds congruency in land-based learning as being fundamental to indigenous learning and similar to the Erdkinder emphasis for the adolescent where interconnectedness and community roles arise out of farming. Abstract/Notes: The documentation of educational processes and the development of children is today seen as a sign of high quality in ECE centres and as a central task of pedagogues. This general and widely undisputed setting is fed by both (elementary) pedagogical theories and programs as well as by political requirements. First, four significant educational approaches (Montessori and Waldorf education as well as the Situation approach and the Reggio approach) will be examined to see what importance they attribute to documentation. Subsequently, the today in theory and practice of elementary education dominant social constructivist educational understanding will be illuminated in more detail with regard to documentation; this is followed by an analysis of the curricula of the German federal states as relevant political framework for the work in ECE centres. Finally, these theoretical and political foundations will be brought together by working out the diversity of objectives associated with documentation as well as the different addressees of documentation.

Abstract/Notes: Aim: The topic of the article is the issue of popularizing the Maria Montessori method in the magazine “Przedszkole Przedszkolne” (1925–1939). The article was divided into five parts. The first presents the magazine “Preschool Education”, its issues and educational and popularizing functions. The second part of the article contains an outline of Maria Montessori’s biography up to 1910. The most important turning point in the life of this outstanding teacher is the year in which she gave up her medical practice and didactic work at the University of Rome, devoting herself entirely to teaching, primarily improving and promoting her own method. The most important for the discussed issue, i.e. the third, fourth and fifth parts include the description and the analysis of articles describing the Montessori method in the pages of Preschool Education, presentation of the section with sets of sense exercises and presentation of critical voices regarding this method, published in this journal. Methods: a critical analysis of sources. Results: an analysis of original articles propagating the Maria Montessori method in the magazine “Preschool Education” (1925–1939), whose founder and editor-in-chief was Maria Weryho-Radziwiłłowicz. Conclusions: In the years 1925–1939, the magazine “Preschool Education” published several articles that were a valuable source of information about the pedagogy of Maria Montessori and the organization of “children’s homes”. The authors of the most important of them were Klara Grunwald, and critical of this method ‒ Zofia Bogdanowiczowa. Importantly, in 1936 a translation of one of Maria Montessori’s lectures was published. The editors of “Preschool Education” placed great emphasis on the issues of pedagogical practice, which is why from the first issue the subject of sensory education was promoted. A huge number of various the so-called sensory exercises, in the form of usually creative suggestions for educators, could however result in the shallowing of the Montessori method as a whole.
