Abstract/Notes: The study presents the life and work of Clara Grunwald and Maria Montessori, on the special background of the development of the Montessori movement in Berlin from the 1920s until the Nazis came to power in 1933 and their consequences. In this study, the effectiveness of Clara Grunwald for Montessori pedagogy in Germany, explicitly in Berlin during the Weimar Republic, is made clear. Here their intention, their influence and their commitment to the establishment of Montessori pedagogy and the development of the Montessori movement in Berlin are described. In addition, the emerging conflict between Maria Montessori and Clara Grunwald is viewed in several layers, as various factors influenced the development and spread of Montessori pedagogy. The conflict between the two women shows fateful effects on the person and work of Clara Grunwald, as well as on the Montessori movement in Berlin. The seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933 also had serious effects on the work of Clara Grunwald and on Montessori pedagogy in Germany, which resulted in the decline of Montessori pedagogy. Against this historical background, the development of Montessori pedagogy after the end of the Second World War up to the present is examined and briefly outlined. (This is a published version of the author's thesis/dissertation.)

[Reform pedagogy is still considered a »magic factor« today. She enchants her followers with the catchy formula: Education should not only be »natural«, but also appreciative, practical and individual. So she promises healing (from false pedagogy) and hypocritically argues: Both "straighten" and "overcome" are indispensable components of her canon of pedagogical guiding principles. Maria Montessori and Ellen Key's concepts of childhood are particularly valued for their celebration of "life." Sometimes, however, their arguments are not very life-affirming. What is particularly striking is that they particularly appreciate healthy, normal and obedient children. The ideal offspring should be both obedient and inconspicuous: not every child is valuable in and of itself. They therefore appeal to future parents to only help the right hereditary factors into life (which are not necessarily their own). In general, both have very specific ideas about how children should be... and what could happen if they aren't how they should be.]

The Montessori method seems to be well established in the landscape of alternative pedagogies today. Its particularities: a heritage of the Progressive Education, a rupture of the formal schooling, but also through the intermediary of a mediating material, a change in the educational relationship between adults and children. How can it be qualified? What are its specificities, its invariants? Because it is based on values related to the development of the student, to his capacities, to his successes; but also on a very particular role of the adult educator, sufficiently step back in order not to disturb the pupil, while being a resource, a crutch, a source of motivation to start working, this method seems, for these reasons, to contribute to the well-being of the student in school. Should it be an educational ethic based on empathy? It is by putting into perspective some writings of the pedagogue with examples of class situations that we propose to reflect on this question, by adopting a research posture that mixes textual hermeneutics and ethnographic observation.
