Teacher-Student Interaction in a Mexican Montessori School: Exploring the Construction of Gender Identity in Young Children

Abstract/Notes: The present study is centered on understanding the gender concepts teachers have, and the form in which their gender perspective is related to the way teachers of a Mexican Montessori elementary school interact with their students according to the child's gender in the early elementary school years. The type of messages teachers are sending to children when they are in the classroom in relation to the concepts of masculinity and feminity are discussed. The analysis is rooted in qualitative research methodology and the gender category. Gender is seen as a social phenomenon. The paper deals with the work that has been done in gender and schools, especially related to the role teachers have when dealing with gender in the classroom. It discusses how a different method of education, in this case the Montessori method, differs from the traditional system of education when dealing with gender issues. The way teachers deal with gender issues at school is deeply connected to the viewpoint of gender they have. The narratives of the teachers help us understand this relation. It is hoped that by examining their own practice toward gender issues teachers will take a first step towards a non-sexist education. It is true that the Montessori system breaks from many of the conventional gender-biased practices of traditional schools; even so, a total change cannot be seen until our own perspectives on gender evolve.

Pilgrims and Guides: A Phenomenological Study of Montessori Teachers Guiding and Being Guided by Children in Public Montessori Schools

Abstract/Notes: This study explores the experiences of public school Montessori teachers. Max van Manen’s methodology for hermeneutic phenomenological research provides a framework for the study, and the philosophical writings of Gadamer, Abram, and Levinas guide the textual interpretations. Voices of curriculum theorists, in conversation with Maria Montessori’s words, reveal possibilities for understanding the experiences of Montessori public school teachers in the context of contemporary curriculum discourse. Six public school Montessori teachers engage with the researcher in a series of open-ended conversations. These elementary school teachers work with majority minority student populations in three different urban school districts. They range in age from mid-30s to early 60s, and have between 5 and 33 years of teaching experience in public Montessori schools. Their conversations illuminate the experience of teaching in public Montessori schools in three main themes. The teachers tell of being transformed and drawn-in to a way of life as they take Montessori training. They speak of the goodness of work that calls children to concentrate their energies and grow into active, caring and responsible people. Finally, they reflect on boundaries of difference encountered in the hallways and meeting places of public schools, and the shadows cast by state tests. The study suggests a need for Montessori teachers in public schools to participate in open-hearted conversations with parents, non-Montessori educators and administrators about what they are trying to do in their classrooms. It also reveals that decisions made by school administrators have a powerful effect on the ability of Montessorians to create engaging, child-centered learning environments. Finally, the study suggests a need for teachers, administrators, teacher-educators, and policy makers to embrace the questions and possibilities for creative growth inherent in tensions between the conflicting paradigms of adult-driven technical/scientific educational schema and the Montessori developmentally-based teaching style.

Abstract/Notes: This study aims to analyze the implementation of Inclusive Education policy in KB Ar-Ra'uuf Yoeandi. The objectives of the study are to understand the implementation of Permendiknas No 70 Year 2009 on Inclusive Education Article 3 in KB Ar-ra'uuf Yoeandi, to identify the inhibiting and supporting factors in the implementation of the policy, and to find an effective model for the implementation of the policy. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The data is analyzed using the policy implementation model of Elmore, Lipsky, Hjem, and O'Porter. The results of the study show that KB Ar-Ra'uuf Yoeandi has successfully implemented the inclusive education policy using a combination of strategies, such as an inclusive curriculum, RTI and Montessori-based learning, and active participation of all stakeholders. Supporting factors, such as disability-friendly school infrastructure, and inhibiting factors, such as limited human and financial resources, affect the implementation process. The contextualized implementation model is considered the most relevant in understanding the complexity of implementation and the influence of internal and external school factors on its success. This study provides an important contribution to understanding best practices for achieving inclusive education. KB Ar-Ra'uuf Yoeandi is a successful example of creating an inclusive and friendly educational environment for all students, and provides inspiration for other schools to improve inclusivity in the educational environment.
