[Person-centered approaches are a model of support for older people with cognitive disorders that have been developing in recent years. Its benefits have been well documented, but the concrete implementation of its main principles sometimes remains unclear. In this context, the Montessori method adapted to the elderly constitutes one of the proposals for concrete application. It integrates the vision and the main humanist principles of the scientific pedagogy of Maria Montessori and the tools and techniques of rehabilitation. It aims to give the person back control over his life, to encourage his involvement in meaningful activities and to give him back a place and a role in the community. In this literature review, we will first approach the current of person-centered approaches in a general way, then we will present in more detail the history and principles of the Montessori method adapted to the elderly in order to propose a clear and structured vision.]

Understanding Equitable Access to Public Montessori Pre-K: A Case Study of Montessori Recruitment and Enrollment Practices

Available from: Child Trends

Abstract/Notes: Ensuring equitable access to high-quality early education for families from all racial, ethnic, and income backgrounds is a critical component for addressing systemic racism and inequality within the public education system. This study examined one piece of this issue by investigating access to public Montessori pre-K, as well as barriers that may hinder equitable access. While many public Montessori pre-K programs report that students are admitted through a random lottery process, initial efforts to study these programs indicated that certain enrollment policies may create barriers to access. Potential barriers to accessing public Montessori pre-K include lottery priority status for siblings, neighborhood residents, and children of staff; a lack of targeted recruitment practices for families from underserved communities; and affordability. These barriers to access may disproportionally affect Black and Latino families and families facing poverty, who have unequal access to high-quality educational opportunities overall. The Montessori model was originally created to give children with learning challenges (e.g., children who exhibited concentration, attention, and discipline challenges) a high-quality educational environment where they could thrive. Given the origins of the Montessori pedagogy and existing disparities within the educational system, questions of equity should be at the center of policy development for accessing public Montessori pre-K.

The Montessori method, which has been applied in many countries of the world for more than a century, is an educational approach that aims to support the development and learning of children from early years with a specially prepared environment and child-centered approaches, and that the child becomes an independent individual. In this study, based on the relationship between education and neuroscience, it is aimed to explain the basic features of the Montessori education method with a neuroscientific perspective, and to reveal an interdisciplinary perspective by examining the studies that associate Montessori and neuroscience. This research is a qualitative research planned in the type of review. The documents were reached in two scanning stages by using the document analyses technique in the collection of data. In the first screening, the studies that associate the Montessori method with neuroscientific studies were examined, and it was determined that the characteristics of the Montessori method such as "Sensitive Periods", "Structured Environment", "Sensory Education", "Repeat Self-Learning", "Language-Brain" and "Movement-Brain" were associated with neuroscience. In the second screening, how these features were explained in Montessori and neuroscience studies was examined. Research findings have shown that the characteristics of Montessori regarding child development and learning are supported by the research findings in the field of neuroscience after years.
