Abstract/Notes: A presente Dissertação de Mestrado, O projeto do espaço educativo - O Kindergarten na génese da escola contemporânea de Herman Hertzberger, propõe uma análise e uma reflexão dos espaços escolares projetados pelo oarquiteto holandês Herman Hertzberger (1932- ), entre 1960 e 2007. No conjunto de obras analisadas, foram destacados alguns temas projetuais caraterísticos dos espaços escolares. Estes temas encontram a própriaorigem no modelo educativo desenvolvido pela médica italiana Maria Montessori (1879-1952) no início do século XX. Nesse contexto, destacam-se os seguintes temas: 1) A polivalência da sala de aula, sendo um dos temas baseado no modelo montessoriano e de relevância nas obras do arquiteto; 2) A função distributiva e social do espaço central, assemelhando-se à piazza de Malaguzzi (1920-1994), com influências de Froebel (1782-1852); 3) A ideia de "learning street" do corredor, assumindo-se como um espaço flexível. O estudo destes temas, entre outros, tornou-se essencial para a compre ensãodas escolas de Herman Hertzberger e, consequentemente, da sua obra em geral. [This Master Thesis proposes an analysis and a reflection of school spaces designed by Dutch architect Herman Hertzberger (1932- ), between 1960 and 2007. The set of works analyzed were assigned some design themes with typical interest in school spaces. These themes have origin in the educational model developed by Italian doctor Maria Montessori (1879-1952) at the beginning of the 20th century. In this context, stands out the following themes: 1) The versatility of the classroom, one of the themes based on the educational model proposed by Maria Montessori and one of the most relevant themes in the architect's work; 2) The distributive and social functions of the central space, similar to the piazza of Malaguzzi (1920-1994), with influences from Froebel (1782-1852); 3) The idea of "learning street" of the corridor, becoming a flexible space. The study of these subjects, among others, was essential to understand Herman Hertzbergers' schools and, consequently, his work in general.]

Abstract/Notes: In acknowledging the privilege that we as Montessorians are given, "the privilege of being present as children construct themselves," Mary Caroline Parker proposes that parents also should be given that same privilege. Parker created an "Art of Observation" workshop for the parents at her school. She walks us through the framework for the workshop itself that includes classroom observation of their children and the follow-up that she did with parents who had attended the workshop, which included a survey and a discussion group. She pulls together the responses of parents as data to analyze, quoting many of the parent responses. She provides us a summary of work that is insightful and affirming to any Montessori educator. Abstract/Notes: Part II of this two-part article continues the discussion of what Maria Montessori viewed to be the important components of her educational system. Because she developed the system over her lifetime, we prioritized later accounts when contradictory accounts were found. Whereas Part I focused on the environment, Part II examines the second and third components of the Montessori trinity: the teacher and the child. This article includes descriptions of Montessori teacher prepara­tion, children’s developmental stages, and the human tendencies on which Montessori education capitalizes. It ends with child outcomes as described by Dr. Montessori and as shown in recent research, and provides an appendix summarizing features of authentic Montessori described in Part I and Part II.

Abstract/Notes: With the passing of NCLB in 2001, pedagogy in the kindergarten classroom has changed exponentially. The requirement for a rigorous academic curriculum has replaced the play-based learning that used to be synonymous with the kindergarten classroom. Since the beginning of kindergarten, researchers have worked to prove the importance of play in the classroom and the role of the educator in these play-based learning scenarios. Many studies have found a correlation between play and child development, but this has not been enough to change the minds of educators and school districts across the United States. This qualitative case study explored teachers’ perceptions and classroom interactions during play through a triangulation of data including video recordings, interviews, and observations to explore the effect play might have on the social, emotional, and oral language development of kindergarten students in a district that is already implementing free play centers in the classroom. Varying beliefs among the educators and multiple scenarios of social, emotional, and oral language development skills being used by students during these free play sessions were explored. Key themes that emerged from the data included a range of understanding amongst the teachers, the need for regular professional development on how to implement play in the classroom, and the importance dramatic play has on social, emotional, and oral language development for kindergarten students.
