The theoretical part of the thesis provides a summary of the Montessori teaching principles and their application to language teaching, including an examination of second language acquisition. The practical part of the thesis involves observing English lessons in Montessori environment, analysing relevant documents, and creation of teaching materials specifically adjusted to the Montessori approach. The ultimate goal of this research is to identify effective teaching strategies and materials for teaching English as a second language in Montessori schools, while also contributing to a deeper understanding of the Montessori approach to education. Both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods were used to determine the quality, accuracy and effectiveness of the materials. The created materials are enclosed to the appendices. / Tato práce se zabývá výukou angličtiny jakožto druhého jazyka v prostředí Montessori školy. Teoretická část práce obsahuje shrnutí principů Montessori pedagogiky a jejich aplikaci na výuku jazyků, včetně průzkumu osvojování druhého jazyka. Praktická část práce zahrnuje pozorování výuky angličtiny v Montessori prostředí, analýzu relevantních dokumentů a tvorbu výukových materiálů specificky upravených pro Montessori přístup. Ke zjištění kvality, přesnosti a účinnosti vytvořených a implementovaných materiálů byly vybrány kvalitativní i kvantitativní metody sběru dat. Konečným cílem tohoto výzkumu je identifikovat efektivní výukové strategie a materiály pro výuku angličtiny jako druhého jazyka v Montessori školách a zároveň přispět k hlubšímu pochopení Montessori přístupu ke vzdělávání. A Student-Centered Approach to Teaching Mathematics to English Language Learners in the Montessori Classroom

Available from: MINDS@UW River Falls

Abstract/Notes: Making math instruction accessible to students can be a challenge, particularly when students have limited English proficiency. This paper explores how teachers can best suit the needs of their non-native English speakers when teaching math. Teacher affect, visuals and translanguaging are used in this study in an attempt to boost student confidence and academic progress. These strategies result in an increase in student confidence and engagement, as measured by a math attitude survey as well as observation data. Centered around a Montessori classroom, this paper shows how aspects of the Montessori philosophy cater to English learners and suggests additional supports that may be beneficial.

Abstract/Notes: The objectives of this research were to explain about how Montessori implemented the teaching and learning process of English for children and to explain about how Montessori Approach can be implemented on children’s language acquisition for two-word stages in the classroom. The researcher used a qualitative research method of case study by implementing three stages of analysis from Miles & Huberman. The result of this research showed that (1) the teaching and learning process in Kinder Haus class was done into four stages. There were warm up activities (singing & dancing, games), the first main lesson activity (Art & Craft, language), second lesson activity (Practical Life) and the third lesson activity (Sensory activity). (2) Montessori Approach can be implemented on children’s language acquisition for two - word stages in the classroom especially in the “practical life” area. The children used the simple words or instructions automatically, either with themselves or their friends in the classroom. Therefore, the implementation of Montessori Approach in the classroom can be done into four stages and the children produced the words for the level of the two – words. Abstract/Notes: Montessori is a learning method to stimulate children to reach their potential in all fields. In the field of reading literacy, one of the initial stages is how to stimulate initial reading skills, starting with introducing letters using the syllable learning method. The stimulation process must be in a fun and not boring way of playing exploration so that children will not feel that they are learning, especially in the current state of the Covid-19 pandemic, where the learning process becomes boring for children because it has to be done at home. The purpose of this research is to create a learning technology in the form of an electronic puzzle Montessori Sand Board Letter (SBL) for Indonesian syllables that can help stimulate early childhood according to the Montessori principle in recognizing syllables. The system development method uses the System Development Life-Cycle (SDLC) method. Based on the results of functional testing using the black box method, it states that all functional systems function 100% according to design and objectives. The results of testing and validation by Montessori practitioners stated that the system was in accordance with Montessori rules. Based on the results of usage observations, the Montessori Sand Board Letter (SBL) electronic puzzle for Indonesian syllables can be an alternative learning tool to introduce Indonesian syllables for the initial reading learning process.
