Abstract/Notes: This research aims to determine the effectiveness of implementing the Montessori Method in an effort to build understanding of basic mathematical concepts in grade 1 students at MI Tarbiyatus Shibyan Kembiritan Genteng Banyuwangi. This research is quantitative quasi-experimental, using parallel classes namely classes for the experimental group that receive learning using the Montessori method and control group classes with conventional learning. Data was collected through a test of understanding basic mathematical concepts before (pretest) and after the intervention (post test). The research results show that the average value of N- Gain in the experimental class is 70.00. The average N-Gain value of the control class is 15.47. This shows that the Montessori Method is 54.53% more effective in improving student learning outcomes on adding tens and hundreds than conventional methods. The application of the Montessori method makes a positive contribution to increasing students' understanding, especially in critical aspects of mathematics for grade 1 students. Statistical analysis shows significant differences between the two groups, with a p-value of 0.00<0.05 which supports the effectiveness of the Montessori method. The implication of this research is that the application of the Montessori method can be used as an effective alternative learning approach to build understanding of basic mathematical concepts in grade 1 students. This can be a reference for schools, teachers and policy makers in designing more effective learning strategies at the educational level basic, especially at MI Tarbiyatus Shibyan Kembiritan Genteng Banyuwangi. Further studies can explore the long-term impact of implementing the Montessori method in the context of Islamic education.

Abstract/Notes: Primary School education in Germany is characterized by a strong belief that didactic theory and practice must move towards the “individualization” of teaching and learning. This is considered to be the best way of acknowledging the heterogeneity of learners: Each student should be able to learn on his or her own pace and follow his or her own way of learning. Although these concepts are rather popular in German pedagogical literature, empirical evidence supporting these arguments are rare. Most notably missing are studies on a micro-level of teaching and learning. The research which is reported in this chapter aims at discussing individualized teaching and learning at the level of classroom practices and practical demands. The chapter presents and discusses two pieces of empirical data. It shows an observation of a student working with a learning device called the “pharmacy”, a complex learning tool used in Maria Montessori schools. And secondly, it presents the transcript of a teacher-student-interaction on learning to read. The discussion points to the structure of child-centered teaching and learning: Many of the students’ activities have the character of a routine piece of work, the accuracy of the handling seems to be more important than the understanding. The interaction between teachers and students is characterized by the fact that it is one-to-one interaction within a group of learners who have diverse needs. Hence, the teacher-student-interaction is under pressure to make it result in a success. For “child-centered“ learning there seems to be a strong tendency to focus on procedures keeping the students busy when it comes to organizing the autonomy and self-reliance of learning.

Abstract/Notes: İtalyan eğitim felsefesi uzmanı Maria Montessori 1970 yılında İtalya Ancora’da dünyaya gelmiştir. [Italian pedagogue Maria Montessori was born in 1970 in Ancona, Italy. The Montessori education system, which has been used for over a century, was developed by Maria Montessori. With this education system, where there is no restriction, a free education is offered to children. Today, trainers are trained by the International Montessori Association in England in order to provide Montessori education. This education goes up to kindergarten, primary school and in some countries high school level. Maria Montessori determined what the children liked and disliked in her observations while working with non-disabled children in the first children's home “Casa dei Bambini” in 1907. Maria Montessori observed that children: they do not like rewards, punishments, toys, teacher's desk, group lessons, they like free choice, control over their mistakes, silence, establishing social relations by themselves, reading and writing without books. In Montessori education, where children see themselves as individuals, family, teacher and student are in cooperation. Education is given in line with the student's learning pace and knowledge is learned by groping, not by mind. It is ensured that abstract concepts are understood with concrete concepts. Montessori education primarily focuses on the formation of personality. Maria Montessori expresses this clearly as follows: “In education, not the method, but the human personality is taken into consideration.”]
