Abstract/Notes: This study examines teaching and learning economics and entrepreneurship through a student-run Montessori middle school store. By designing and managing a school store, students created a 'community of practice' to learn economics concepts in their daily environment. Questions guiding this study were: (a) How do students' social-interactions in a Montessori middle school student-operated business demonstrate economics content knowledge? (b) How do students' social-interactions in a Montessori middle school student-operated business demonstrate economics skills? (c) How do students' business roles in the store develop their understanding of economics principles? Findings indicate that: (1) student activities in the school store promoted learning through social interaction; (2) the type and number of business roles a student assumed created opportunities for economic learning; (3) student entrepreneurs expressed specific knowledge of economics concepts, and, (4) students' decision-making and ownership affected behavior. Additionally, features of Kohlberg's (1985) concept of Just Community supported the learning environment. This study can provide social studies teachers and teacher-educators with a model for learning economics (or social studies) concepts through a curricular-based student-run enterprise.

Abstract/Notes: The study compares two groups of students who graduated from high school in the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) during 1997–2001. Students who had participated in MPS Montessori programs from preschool through 5th grade were matched to a comparison group on the basis of gender, SES, race/ethnicity, and high school attended. Data from the ACT and WKCE, as well as overall and subject-specific high school grade point averages, were used in exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Once a model was established, the factors were regressed on the students' demographic characteristics and type of elementary education in a structural equation modeling framework. The Montessori group had significantly higher scores on tests associated with the math/science factor. There were no significant group differences for the factors associated with English/social studies and grade point average.

Abstract/Notes: Montessori programs are expanding in public schools, serving a large proportion of African American students. Although recent Montessori research has focused on diverse public school populations, few studies have examined outcomes for African American students at the lower elementary level. This quasi-experimental study compares reading and math achievement for African American third grade students in public Montessori and other magnet schools in a large, urban district in North Carolina. Scores from end-of-grade state tests of reading and math are compared using a multivariate analysis of covariance. No significant difference in math scores was identified, but students in Montessori schools scored significantly higher in reading. This suggests that Montessori lower elementary instruction may be beneficial for African American students.

Abstract/Notes: While I was accustomed to seeing students take on projects to collect funds (or canned food, shoes, blankets, etc.) for people in need, Middle School students at Valley Montessori School (Livermore, CA) took things further a few years ago.(Both purchases helped to protect and preserve threatened and endangered habitats.) Classes have also raised funds for the grassroots campaign Nothing but Nets, which provides much-needed bed nets to keep out mosquitoes and help prevent malaria in Africa.After learning that AMS 2016 Living Legacy Carolyn Kambich spoke about building Montessori schools and teacher training centers in Uganda at the AMS 2016 Annual Conference, Valley Middle School students determined that they should host a breakfast and boutique event, in which they would make and sell breakfast foods and craft items, to educate others about and raise money for this endeavor.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of the Meeting Students' Needs in the Multiage Group Environment (MSN) program was to provide an instructional system to meet the needs of elementary school students of differing achievement, age, and grade level who are in the same classroom. The program, for kindergarten through grade six, was characterized by an innovative management system, a procedure for continuous assessment of educational needs and achievement, an emphasis on the development of independent behavior, and the encouragement of parent and community involvement. MSN was evaluated through a procedure that called for the comparison of intended outcomes to actual outcomes. Findings from standardized tests of achievement indicated that students in grades one through four increased their percentile ranks in reading or mathematics or both. Similar gains were not observed for grades five and six. Two project-designed instruments developed to measure independence, self-reliance, and responsibility did not

It presents a broad spectrum of subjects and designs, with practical experience and evaluation of the use of these buildings serving as a leitmotif. This immensely successful book has gone through many reprints and has also been published in Japanese, German, Italian, Portuguese, Taiwanese, Dutch, Greek, Chinese, French, Polish and Persian. More than 750 illustrations give a broad insight into Hertzberger's 'library' and a stimulating impression of the influences and sources of inspiration of one of the Netherlands' major postwar architects.
