Abstract/Notes: This brief report summarizes progress to date in a continuing study, now in its sixth year, of Montessori education in Cincinnati. Follow-up tests of Montessori children are focusing on the relation of early performance to grade school achivement four years later. This study represents the first systematic attempt to compare long term effects of Montessori with other educational approaches. The Cincinnati Autonomy Test Battery (CATB) was developed to measure educational methods (like Montessori) that stress spontaneous activity, self-direction, and a prepared didactic environment. Published summaries of projects that are part of the Montessori Research Project are mentioned. Future plans stress increased communication among researchers, teachers, parents and children.

Abstract/Notes: The organization of thorough reference literature, in particular biobibliographic indexes dedicated to outstanding figures of Ukrainian and world science and history, which have been undeservedly forgotten for a long time, remains an urgent problem of modern studies in Ukraine. Іn recent decades, in the context of the development of alternative education and the creation of the New Ukrainian School, research of the scientific activity and creative heritage of the outstanding Italian teacher M. Montessori are revived. However, the content of the index “Montessori. International bibliography 1896-2000”, which contains more than 14,000 items of literature with comments in Italian and English, shows that by the beginning of the XXI century. Ukraine was an outsider to world Montessorianism. It is not mentioned in the list of 53 countries whose scientists most actively participated in the development of Montessori pedagogy [5]. In 2015-2016, only two reference books “Ray of Light of Maria Montessori” and “Maria Montessori (1870-1952): biobibliographic index” were compiled, which give an opportunity to make a certain idea about the state of research of the life path and creative output of the Italian teacher in Ukraine. Also a comprehensive historical and biographical study of the figure of M. Montessori has not yet been created, and there are no translations of her scientific works into Ukrainian. The only such translation was made in 1921 by Yu. Shcherbachenko.

From Efficacy to Effectiveness to Diffusion: Making the Transitions in Dementia Intervention Research

Available from: Taylor and Francis Online

Abstract/Notes: Translating research outcomes into clinical application in neuropsychological rehabilitation is seen as requiring two critical transitions. The first is a transition in research outcome emphasis from efficacy (demonstrating that an intervention works under controlled conditions) to effectiveness (demonstrating that an intervention works as implemented in real-world contexts). The second is a transition in which effective interventions are required to be diffused within caregiving systems to enable them to be implemented on a large scale. Examples of these transitions are provided within the context of designing interventions for persons with dementia.

Abstract/Notes: Background: Patients with dementia experience a variety of neuropsychiatric symptoms and behavioral disturbances. The Montessori method is a type of non-pharmacological intervention to care for people with dementia. However, there are few bibliometric studies on the application of Montessori methods. We aimed to analyze the hotspots and trends of research on the application of Montessori methods to the care of dementia patients. Methods: Microsoft Office Excel, Co-Occurrence 9.9, and CiteSpace were used to analyze the articles on Montessori intervention in patients with dementia from 2000 to 2021 in China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Web of Science core collection database, PubMed, and Scopus. Results: A total of 23 Chinese language publications and 113 English language publications were included. The number of English language publications was on the rise, while the number of Chinese language publications was low. There are many issuing institutions which published articles in this field, mostly concentrated in universities. English language publication sources were more than Chinese language publication sources. The hot research topic in Chinese language publications and English language publications was the care of agitated behavior of dementia patients based on the Montessori method. The psychological problems of dementia patients are likely to become a hot issue of concern for scholars in Chinese. There will be a lot of research focusing on dementia patients and their family caregivers in this field. Conclusion: The bibliometric and visualization analysis helps us understand the current research status and hotspots of Montessori intervention in dementia patients in Chinese language publications and English language publications.

Abstract/Notes: This essay spotlights several future directions for global Montessori research with a particular focus on 1) Displaced communities and cultural preservation through Montessori, 2) Global expansion of public or government-funded Montessori, 3) the efficacy of Montessori to children around the globe, and 4) Regional Montessori histories which aim to highlight research regarding countries and regions omitted from chapter-length country profiles in this section. Each section includes some suggestions for future research. The essay also includes information about the Montessori Bibliography Online, a resource that collates Montessori sources spread across libraries, archives, and other repositories around the globe, and its potential use for future research.

Abstract/Notes: Logic models are tools that are commonly used in research and program evaluation across the social sciences. The logic model presented in this chapter has the potential to lay a foundation across disciplines for research that is rigorous and systematic in its measurement of Montessori processes and outcomes. The accessible, visual nature of the Montessori logic model displays the core components and activities, underlying assumptions, and intended outcomes of the approach to create a shared understanding that is valuable for researchers, evaluators, funders, and practitioners. The model facilitates a common understanding of Montessori pedagogy and appropriate assessment of the outcomes of Montessori education.

Fidelity Issues in Montessori Research

Abstract/Notes: The conflicting goals of expanding Montessori education and maintaining authenticity were issues for Maria Montessori herself beginning in the earliest days of growing interest in her method, and they are issues that continue in Montessori research today. While program fidelity is an important consideration for researchers studying any type of educational intervention, unique aspects of Montessori education make the topic of assessing the model’s authenticity even more critical and complex. This chapter outlines early efforts to ensure the integrity of educational programs using the Montessori name and examines the range of approaches researchers now employ to account for implementation fidelity in their studies. While the focus in this chapter is on fidelity issues as they relate to research, debates about what constitutes authentic Montessori programs also have practical implications linked to efficacy and access.
