Abstract/Notes: The present study compares elementary school children from Traditional and Montessori programs. The purpose is to investigate how different educational philosophies and teaching methods affect perceived levels of self-esteem, self-efficacy, prosocial behavior and aggressive behavior in children. The participants in this study consisted of second through sixth grade students who were attending Montessori and Traditional schools since the age of five, or earlier. All children completed the Washington Self-Description Questionnaire (WSDQ), three subscales of the Children's Multi-dimensional Self-Efficacy Scales (i.e., academic achievement, self-regulated learning, & social), the Physical and Verbal Aggression Scale, and the Prosocial Behavior Scale. No significant differences were revealed between the Montessori and Traditional programs in relation to the children's perceived levels of self-esteem, self-efficacy for academic achievement, self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, social self-efficacy, or prosocial behavior. However, the Montessori children reported significantly lower levels of physical/verbal aggression than the Traditional children. Moreover, as Montessori children develop a heightened ability to work within a group of peers, they seem to develop lower levels of physical/verbal aggression, which was not found among Traditional children. Furthermore, Montessori children's perceived ability to make and keep friends of the same gender was found to significantly improve with increased years in the program, which was not found in the Traditional method. For Montessori children, their perceived ability to work together in a group was found to be positively associated with heightened levels of self-efficacy for academic achievement and self-efficacy for self-regulated learning. Furthermore, the Montessori children's levels of self-esteem were correlated significantly with their perceived levels of self-efficacy for academic achievement and self-efficacy for self-regulated learning. Although Traditional children were also found to gain self-efficacy for self-regulated learning through working together at young ages, as they proceed to higher grade levels, their self-efficacy for self-regulated learning decreased.

Abstract/Notes: Anaokulları okul öncesi çocukların bilgi ve becerilerini destekleyen eğitim kurumlarıdır. Farklı eğitim sistemlerini benimsemiş olan anaokullarında aktivitelere göre alanlar oluşturulmaktadır. Algının ve çevrenin öneminin büyük olduğu bu dönemde çocukların hayal güçlerine ilham verecek mekanlar tasarlanmalıdır. Çocukların sözlü beceriden önce öğrenilen görsel dil ile yaratıcılıkları desteklenmektedir. Bunun yanında mekanda bulunan güvenli ve ulaşılabilir mobilyalar da çocukların özgürce hareket etmelerini ve sorumluluk bilinci kazanmalarını sağlamaktadır. Anadilin yanında farklı bir dilin de okul öncesi dönemde öğrenilmesi için mekanda kullanılan görseller ve bunları destekleyici yabancı dilde kelimeler ile görsel hafıza da yer etmesi sağlanabilmektedir. Bu sayede öğrenilen yabancı dildeki kelimeler ile hafızadaki ilişki kuvvetlenerek hatırlanması kolaylaşmaktadır. Bu makalenin amacı Montessori anaokullarında kullanılan mekan ihtiyaçlarını ve günümüz okullarında oluşturulan modern tasarımları araştırmaktadır. Sonuç olarak mekanda kullanılan eğrisel formlar ve donatı elemanlarının boyutlarının çocuklara göre tasarlanması ile çocuğun özgürce hareket edebileceği mekanlar eldeilmektedir. Bu mekanlar bir bütünlük içerisinde estetik bir uyum ile tasarlanmalıdır. Bir düzen içerisinde organize edilmiş az ve yeterli sayıda renk ve obje ile daha huzurlu bir mekan oluşturulmaktadır. Tasarımda ana unsuru yetişkinler ve çocuklar arasındaki olumlu ilişkiler oluşturmaktadır. Mekan tasarımı da bu ilişkiyi desteklemektedir. Doğal aydınlatma, uygun boyutta askılıklar, depolama alanlarının yeterli ve güvenli olması, dolaşım alanlarının yeterli olması da gerekmektedir. / Kindergartens are educational institutions that support the knowledge and skills of preschool children. In kindergartens in different education systems, areas are created according to the types of activities. In this period when perception and the environment are of great importance, spaces that will inspire children's imaginations should be designed. Children's creativity is supported by the visual language learned before verbal skills. In addition, safe furniture in the space allows children to move freely and gain a sense of responsibility. In addition to the mother tongue, it is possible to learn foreign languages in the pre-school period. Therefore, it can be ensured that the language is embedded in the memory with the visuals used in the space and the words in the foreign language supporting them. In this way, the relationship in the memory with the words in the learned foreign language is strengthened and the recall of the word becomes easier. This article aims to explore the space needs found in Montessori kindergartens and the modern designs created in today's schools. As a result, designing the dimensions of the furniture used in the space according to children ensures that children can move freely, implement their own decisions and receive an education without encountering obstacles. The kindergarten interior should be designed with an aesthetic harmony within a unity. Overmuch colors and toys cause a distraction for children. A more peaceful space is created with a sufficient number of colors and objects organized in order.

Abstract/Notes: Montessori education is gaining popularity day by day and it has become one of the most interesting subjects in the field of education all over the world. So what is Montessori education? What does this educational philosophy, which affects everyone, tell? Who is Maria Montessori who revolutionized the field of education? The Montessori Method was prepared to find the answer to all these questions. One of the aims of the Montessori educational philosophy is not only to teach, but also to enable the child to gather his own experiences and explore and be active. This book was written to share these experiences accumulated over the years in Montessori education and the stimulating perspective of Montessori education. The main purpose of the education and activities in the book is to prepare the most suitable environment for children to find everything that will enable them to be independent and to support their development. The inside of the book is completed with many sample applications and drawings in order to make these activities to be done with children much more understandable. This book, prepared by the International Montessori Association (AMI) certified Montessori educator Emel Çakıroğlu Wilbrandt, as a result of years of experience and training, has the feature of being a guide for educators and parents in their daily work with children. / Montessori eğitimi gün geçtikçe yaygınlık kazanıyor ve eğitim alanında, bütün dünyada en ilgi çeken konulardan biri olmuş durumda. Abstract/Notes: The frequency of early childhood education approaches spanning 10 years of publications was investigated. A content analysis of publications (N = 492) from Early Childhood Education Journal was conducted. From a previous content analysis six approaches or search words were identified: Bank Street, Head Start, High/Scope, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf. Overall, the current content analysis demonstrated that the Head Start approach most frequently appeared. The results indicate that approaches vary as to their frequency of appearance and that contributors of Early Childhood Education Journal have investigated, reflected upon, and expanded upon approaches to educating young children to different degrees. This finding may be beneficial to future contributors of Early Childhood Education Journal. In addition, we have provided a brief overview of each approach that early childhood professionals may use to aid parents with their early childhood education enrollment decisions.
