Abstract/Notes: Montessori spaces and materials have often been framed as “gender neutral” or devoid of gendering practices, but there is a lack of research that has critically engaged with gender in Montessori contexts. This chapter explores current efforts to bring gender and sexuality into the conversation in Montessori circles. Using Maria Montessori’s feminist legacy as a springboard, the need for a sustained engagement with contemporary feminist research to complicate understandings of gender is justified. By utilizing contemporary feminist lens, the gender-neutral status of Montessori materials is ruffled and gender within Montessori practice and theory is re-thought as performative, relational, multiple, situated, and complex.

Abstract/Notes: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of teaching via Montessori approach, which is accepted among alternative education methods, on the academic achievement and math attitudes of students concerning the "Geometric Objects and Spatial Relationships" subject in 2nd grade math class. Experimental research method as used in the study is among quantitative research methods. The sample comprised an experimental group of 18 and a control group of 20 people who receive education in a public school in Kocaeli province Dilovası district during the 2019-2020 academic year. The "Traditional Education Method" was used for the control group students, while the "Montessori Education Method" was used for the experimental group students. The study focused on acquisitions discussed in applications performed via the Montessori method. Following the application process the study reapplied the assessment tools given to the students in the pretest. The math lesson achievement test and attitude test were used as data collection tools. The data acquired in both groups was compared and statistically analyzed. As a consequence the students in the classroom where the Montessori method was applied, had higher scores than the control group. Also girls maths attitude scores were found to be higher in experiment group. The dissertation study determined that the Montessori education method has a positive impact on both academic achievement and math attitude. Therefore, Montessori method and materials are implicated as an alternative and effective method for also primary schools and teachers should be couraged to use this method in their classrooms. Keywords: Montessori approach, math ability, math attitude. / Bu araştırmanın amacı, ilkokul 2. Sınıf matematik dersinde "Geometrik Cisimler ve Uzamsal İlişkiler" konusunda, alternatif eğitim yöntemlerinden biri olarak kabul edilen Montessori yaklaşımı ile öğretimin, öğrencilerin akademik başarılarına ve matematik dersine olan tutumlarına etkisini incelemektir. Çalışmada yöntem olarak nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden olan yarı deneysel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Örneklem; 2019-2020 eğitim öğretim yılında, Kocaeli ili Dilovası ilçesinde bir devlet okulunda öğrenim görmekte olan 18 kişilik deney ve 20 kişilik kontrol grubundan oluşmaktadır. Kontrol grubundaki öğrencilerde "Programa Dayalı Eğitim Yöntemi" kullanılırken, deney grubundaki öğrencilerde "Montessori Eğitim Yöntemi" kullanılmıştır. Montessori yöntemiyle yapılan uygulamalarda ele alınan kazanımlara odaklanılmış ve uygulama sürecinin ardından öğrencilere öntestte verilen ölçme araçları tekrar uygulanmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak ise Matematik Dersi Başarı Testi ve Tutum Testi kullanılmıştır. Her iki grupta da elde edilen veriler karşılaştırılmış ve istatistiksel olarak analiz edilmiştir. Sonuçta Montessori yöntemiyle uygulama yapılan sınıftaki öğrencilerin puanlarının kontrol grubuna göre daha yüksek olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Yapılan bu tez çalışması ile Montessori eğitim yönteminin, hem akademik başarıya hem de matematik dersine olan tutuma yönelik etkisinin olumlu yönde olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu bakımdan okullarda Montessori yaklaşımını benimsemiş sınıflar oluşturulmasının, öğretmenlerin ve okul idarecilerinin bu konuda bilgilendirilmesinin ve teşvik edilmesinin yarar sağlayacağı düşünülebilir. Abstract/Notes: Neste texto é apresentado um enredo acerca da circulação de Maria Montessori a partir fontes localizadas na Itália, fruto de um estágio sanduíche cujo um dos objetivos foi de estabelecer fios narrativos que pudessem contribuir para melhor entender aspectos que estão relacionados à circulação de Montessori e o seu contexto de produção de saberes para a formação e o ensino nas primeiras décadas do século XX. É possível dizer, pós análise, que a sistematização da proposta de Montessori na forma escrita contribuiu para a divulgação do seu método, haja vista o “boom” pós publicação da Pedagogia Científica e a publicações de artigos de revistas por ela organizadas. Vale dizer, também, que os cursos de formação de professores ganharam, também, papel importante para a circulação do seu método, haja vista as convocatórias a Montessori feitas por parte do Estado, que podem ser consideradas como reconhecimento de uma expertise para responder à uma demanda prática à época. [This text presents a plot about the circulation of Maria Montessori from sources located in Italy, the result of a sandwich stage whose objective was to establish narrative threads that could contribute to better understanding aspects that are related to the circulation of Montessori and its context of knowledge production for training and teaching in the first decades of the 20th century. It is possible to say, after analysis, that the systematization of Montessori's proposal in written form contributed to the dissemination of his method, given the boom after the publication of Scientific Pedagogy and the publication of articles in journals organized by it. It is also worth mentioning that teacher training courses have also gained an important role in the circulation of their method, given the calls to Montessori made by the State, which can be considered as recognition of an expertise to respond to a practical demand at the time.]

Abstract/Notes: Jutta Hollander stellt in diesem Buch zunächst die wesentlichen Prinzipien der Pädagogik Maria Montessoris in Kindheit und Jugend vor. In einem nächsten Schritt setzt sie sich mit der Frage auseinander, inwiefern sich diese Leitlinien auch auf die gesamte Lebensspanne übertragen lassen. Schwerpunktmäßig nimmt sie dabei die Altersphase in den Blick und sucht nach Möglichkeiten einer konvergenten Annäherung zwischen der Montessori-Pädagogik und Gerontologie. Auf diesem Wege entsteht eine Annäherung, die die über 100jährige Erfahrung mit der Pädagogik Maria Montessoris mit den aktuell drängenden demografischen Fragen zusammenbringt. Wie diese Idee schließlich Eingang in die verschiedenen Bereiche der Gerontologie - insbesondere in die Geragogik finden kann, und wie diese Potentiale entwickelt und in der Praxis genutzt werden können, wird exemplarisch am Beispiel der Hausgemeinschaft gezeigt. [In this book, Jutta Hollander first presents the essential principles of Maria Montessori's pedagogy in childhood and adolescence. In a next step, she deals with the question to what extent these guidelines can also be transferred to the entire lifespan. She focuses on the age phase and looks for possibilities of a convergent approach between Montessori pedagogy and gerontology. In this way, an approach is created that brings together more than 100 years of experience with Maria Montessori's pedagogy with the currently pressing demographic issues.
