Abstract/Notes: Maria Montessori’s work remains popular and influential around the world. She provided fascinating descriptions of her observations of children’s learning. Yet at the heart of her work is a lacuna: the issue of how children learn their first language. For Montessori, it was a marvel, a miracle—but a mystery. We argue that the later philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein offers a way forward. With the clearer view offered by Wittgenstein’s reminders, we propose that Montessori’s work can be reevaluated to better understand Montessori’s contribution, child development and, in particular, how children acquire a first language.

How Speech-Language Pathologists Account for Self-Determination Across the Progression of Dementia

Abstract/Notes: Dementia diagnoses are continuing to increase, with the number of diagnoses expected to reach 231 million globally by 2050 (World Alzheimer’s Report, 2019). With this comes a greater need for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) who are able to best treat those who are diagnosed. Providing person-centered and strengths-based treatment approaches for people with dementia (PWD) has been proven to increase positive engagement responses while decreasing negative engagement responses (Skrainer et al., 2007). The primary objective of this research study was to assess treatment approaches used by SLPs in dementia care setting, along with how SLPs provide person-centered dementia treatment throughout the progression of the disease. An anonymous survey was conducted to analyze SLPs’ perceptions and knowledge of topics regarding dementia and PCC. Participants were recruited from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Special Interest Group: 15. Twenty-five surveys were received, and 15 of those were fully completed. A strong knowledge of treatment options for PWD can aid SLPs providing the best treatment possible for their patients. Without adequate and continued training in the areas of PCC and dementia treatment, many PWD may receive inadequate services, whether the SLP is able to recognize this issue or not.

Abstract/Notes: The Ontario Human Rights Commission's inquiry into how reading (an essential human right) is taught in Ontario schools revealed that Ontario’s public education system is “failing students...by not using evidence-based approaches to teach them to read.” This thesis aimed to address this failure by proposing Montessori language curriculum as a viable alternative to the current (ineffective) practices. The validity of both the new Ontario language curriculum and the Montessori language curriculum were assessed through the use of The Reading League’s Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines (CEG) and their associated workbook. The Ontario language curriculum was found to be lacking, particularly in terms of its lack of clarity, and guidance with regards to practical implementation. The Montessori language curriculum on the other hand was found to meet or surpass the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s recommendations, and in a way that can tangibly be understood and implemented. In light of these findings, Ontario school boards should seriously consider adopting Montessori language curriculum, in whole or in part, to address the systemic reading crisis. All educational stakeholders have a role to play in safeguarding children’s right to read.

Abstract/Notes: The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to deal with a different approach to the teaching and learning of the English language at lower secondary schools by the Montessori Method. The theoretical part investigates the process of learning a foreign language, second language acquisition and introduces the basic principles of Montessori education that can be applied to teaching and learning any foreign language. In addition to this, a brief insight into how such a lesson should be conducted is introduced. The pragmatic component of the thesis focuses on the response of the target question of what the real Montessori lessons look like in reality, and how the Montessori principles are upheld. To conduct the qualitative research and apply the method of case studies, thirty observations in two lower secondary schools and interviews with two teachers were conducted. The observations and interviews took place at the Montessori lower secondary schools Polabiny in Pardubice and Gajdošova in Brno. To confirm the validity of the research, the school curriculum documents were evaluated. The observation demonstrates that the learning and teaching of the English language, using the Montessori system, becomes a challenging option for Montessori teachers. / Cílem této Bakalářské práce je celkový náhled na výuku anglického jazyka na druhém stupni základních škol typu Montessori.
