Abstract/Notes: This research is a case study of African American parent involvement at a urban Montessori school in Minnesota. African American parents at this school have had limited involvement in conferences, PTSO meetings, school activities, and on the Site-Based Leadership Team. An examination of the literature was made to investigate the influences on African American parents when they make decisions about their parental involvement. This research covered the historical background, theoretical background, implications, racial barriers, and strategies that increased African American parent involvement. An ethnography was designed to gather data from 9 mothers of African American students. These parents provided information about their backgrounds and their experiences with the school. Staff at the school (6) were interviewed as to their experiences with African American parent involvement. The results of the study offer findings on attitudes, perceptions, needs and ideas for improving African American parent involvement at any school.

How Does Parent Nutrition Education Change What Children Bring for Lunch?

Available from: St. Catherine University

Action research

Abstract/Notes: The intent of this action research was to see if parent nutrition education changed what parents packed in their children’s lunches. This study was conducted at a Colorado Montessori school enrolling infants through kindergartners. Data sources included teacher observation before and after the nutrition classes, a pre-class parental survey on nutrition knowledge and topic needs, a teacher journal, and a post-class evaluation. Results showed that after the class, five out of seven students’ lunches changed 20 to 60%. Parents incorporated ideas learned from the class and ways to entice picky eaters. Based on this action research project, the school is implementing a hot lunch program. I initiated a monthly food club to teach parents ways to cook multiple meals from a basic staple, explore ethnic cuisines, and share recipes.

Abstract/Notes: This paper presents perspectives from early childhood practitioners of pre-school children’s (n = 100) social and emotional competencies upon entering pre-school and again after term three of the pre-school year. This research reports findings from five pre-school settings within rural and urban locations. A quantitative approach is used with pre-school practitioners completing the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and an Emotional Regulation Questionnaire to rate the children’s social and emotional competencies. Our findings indicate that many of the social and emotional competencies increase by the end of term three of the pre-school year. We report higher proficiencies in emotional competencies in comparison to their social competencies. Overall the findings suggest that children can transform their competencies during the pre-school year.

Hirnforscher bestätigen heute, was Maria Montessori 1907 in ihrem ersten Kinderhaus in San Lorenzo (Rom) beobachtete und entwickelte. In dem Buch werden die Theorie und Praxis der Arbeit im Kinderhaus entfaltet. [The interest in education, care and upbringing of children in the first years of life is becoming increasingly important. Since the first results of the Pisa study, early childhood education has attracted the attention of politicians and thus of the public. Brain researchers today confirm what Maria Montessori observed and developed in 1907 in her first children's home in San Lorenzo (Rome). The book unfolds the theory and practice of working in the children's home.]
